<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

METHOD FOR SEARCHING FOR INSULATION DEFECTS IN ELECTRICAL DISTRIBUTION LINES AND APPARATUS FOR IMPLEMENTATION
OF THIS METHOD.
In an insulation fault, either at the insulators or at the support poles of an electrical distribution line, small arcs, waves, etc., generally occur which give rise to a high frequency disturbance.
The method that is the subject of the invention, resulting from this fact, consists in the application of an electronic discharge device to the detection of this high frequency disturbance.
The invention also comprises for the realization of this
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
method a simple and very sensitive apparatus using electron tubes with three electrodes, the circuits of which are established to obtain the so-called "super-reaction" operation
This apparatus further comprises a provision making it possible, when several points of the line can be incriminated, to remove the doubt as to the defective point.
The object of the invention will moreover be well understood with the aid of what will follow and with reference to the appended drawing which shows, by way of example, an embodiment of an apparatus according to the invention. .
Fig. 1 is a schematic view of the apparatus.
Fig. 2 shows the arrangement adopted in the apparatus to remove the doubt.
According to the method which is the subject of the invention, the high frequency disturbance produced by an insulation fault on the pole 1 supporting the electrical distribution line is picked up by any known device such as a frame 2 for example. This frame is closed by a variable capacitor 3 and by a fraction 4 of a winding. The terminals of the circuit thus formed are connected to an electronic tube with three electrodes 5, the circuits of which are arranged so as to produce a so-called "super-reaction" effect which, as is known, makes it possible to obtain amplification. considerable.
The thread ¯6 of the tube 5 is brought to the incandescence by the source 7 and the plate 8 is brought to the suitable potential by the source 9
The circuits of the tube 5 are arranged in connection with that of the frame as follows: the capacitor 3 is connected - on the one hand to the grid 10 by means of a capacitor 11 which in cooperation with a resistor of high value leakage 12, makes it possible to achieve a detector effect according to one of the usual arrangements - and on the other hand to the filament 6 by means of an oscillating circuit formed by an inductance 13 and a variable capacitor 14 ,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The plate circuit has two branches,
one formed by the variable capacitor 15 and an inductor 16 which is the extension of the inductor 4 and the other formed by an inductor 17 inductively coupled to 13, an indicating device such as a telephone 18 shunted by a capacitor 19 and the voltage source plate 9
These various circuits are suitably chosen and adjusted in the manner described below, that is to say so as to obtain
EMI3.1
the so-called "super-reaction" operation.
The frame circuit is set for a very high frequency e.g. 1,500,000 - It is permanently maintained by means of the bypass 15, 16 of the plate circuit in an electric state such as under the effect of a very weak disturbance the system starts to generate oscillations.
The inductor 16 and the capacitor 15 are adjusted so that the impedance of this lead is easily crossed by the high frequency current while it can stop the flow of a medium frequency current.
Circuit 13, 14 is tuned to an average frequency of 10,000 for example.
Under these conditions the high frequency current produced in the frame circuit easily crosses 1! impedance formed by the circuit 13, 14 while the current of frequency 10,000 cannot cross the shunt 15, 16 which has an excessively large impedance at this frequency.
If a disturbance is brought to this device, that for example produced by the insulation fault on the post 1, oscillations are initiated in the circuit of the frame.
On the other hand, Oscillations of 10,000 periods are produced permanently in the circuit 13, 14 by means of the coupling between the inductors 13 and 17. Therefore the current in the circuit of the frame oscillates at each positive half-wave of the oscillations with 10,000 periods produced in the circuit 13, 14 and this under the action of the disturbance coming from the line
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and acting on the frame. Oscillations at 1,500,000 periods are detected with the aid of the capacitor 11 resistor 12 and result in a lowering of the plate current which can be detected by the telephone 18.
One reason for the unstable electrical state of the circuit of the frame the plate current is amplified in a considerable way which makes it possible to easily detect the disturbance produced by the insulation fault.
To the apparatus as described above may or may not be added an electron tube with three electrodes operating as a low frequency amplifier. In this case, instead of the telephone, there is the primary 20 of a transformer, the secondary 21 of which is connected to the grid circuit of a tube 22. The telephone 18 is then supplied either directly by the plate circuit of this. tube 22 or indirectly via a transformer 23 as shown by way of example in FIG. 2.
When the defective point of the line is doubtful, we can remove the doubt f using the following arrangement: the grid of the tube 22 is connected to a capacitor 24, the free end of which can then be brought into contact at different points of the post 1 The potential difference of this point with respect to the earth determines a current which is amplified by the tube 22 and detected by the telephone 18.
To avoid the note produced by the current at 10,000 periods in the telephone, it is possible, for example, to use the arrangement shown at the end ;. 2 which consists in bypassing the primary of transformer 23 so that this assembly forms a circuit tuned to the frequency of 10,000.
This filter circuit could also be placed in the telephone circuit.
