<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Dans l'affranchisseur qui vient d'être décrit à titre d'exemple, si l'amplificateur magnétique est intercalé dans le circuit primaire de l'élévateur de potentiel il peut cependant être inséré à un autre endroit quelconque ; outre, l'élévateur de potentiel et.le redresseur peuvent être d'un type connu quelconque;
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Electrical cables which are in widespread use may have faults which it is necessary to locate quickly and accurately.
It happens quite often that these flaws do. not very marked; then, to make them detectable with precision, it is essential to accentuate them, that is to say to make them more frank; For this purpose, use is currently made of so-called franking devices by means of which a DC or AC voltage is applied to the cable under test so as to accentuate the fault under the effect of the intensity of the current flowing through it.
The known frankers have drawbacks which are due to the sudden variations in resistance of the defect while it is franked; it follows that during the test, the intensity of the current passing through the cable varies greatly, which means that
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
monitor this current and correct the voltage applied as a function of these variations, otherwise there is a risk of damaging the device or of not accentuating the fault to make it detectable; with the known franking devices it is therefore necessary to carry out manipulations during a franking operation to which the cable is subjected.
The present invention, the object of which is to eliminate these drawbacks, consists of an electric cable fault remover comprising a magnetic amplifier interposed in series in the circuit conducting the current to the fault.
The magnetic amplifier which can also be called variable saturation reactance has two windings or windings called respectively power winding and control winding; according to a characteristic of the invention, the power winding of the magnetic amplifier is connected in series in the circuit traversed by the current burning the fault while the other winding or control winding is crossed by a current continuous control, being connected to any source of direct current.
In a franking device according to the present invention it is provided, after having previously set the no-load voltage to a maximum value, that is to say the voltage compatible with the insulation of the cable, to choose for the control current of the amplifier a value such that the intensity of the current passing through the fault corresponds to the maximum value that the device can withstand; the setting of the open-circuit voltage which is dependent on the type
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
of cable is easily obtained by a transformer with taps or better still by a transformer with variable ratio.
The present invention will be more easily understood from the following description of the appended drawings in which other features may appear.
FIG. 1 represents, without limitation, the diagram of a postage meter produced according to the invention.
Figure 2 shows the relationship between voltage and current for different no-load voltages that is to say for different cables.
Referring to Figure 1 it can be seen that a postage meter comprises a variable ratio transformer 1 connected to the source not shown providing the operating voltage. On this transformer, a movable plug 1a can be moved which closes the primary supply circuit of the potential step-up 5. In series in this circuit is interposed the power winding 3 of a magnetic amplifier, the control winding of which 2. is connected via its terminals 4 to any source, not shown, of direct current. The secondary circuit of the elevator 5 is connected on the one hand to ground at 6 and on the other hand to any known rectifier which is shown diagrammatically at 7 and which is connected to terminal 8 to which the cable to be tested arrives.
The curves in figure 2 give the variations of the voltage U with respect to the current for various no-load voltages, that is to say for different cables.
Examination of these curves shows that as soon as the arc starts, the intensity in the fault increases very quickly to reach a very strong maximum value, after which it
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
stabilizes without any intervention or manipulation at this maximum admissible value corresponding to the short-circuiting indicated by the vertical part of the curves; this is due to the fact that the current flowing through the power winding of the independent magnetic amplifier of the voltage at its terminals, depends only on the direct control current which has been arbitrarily chosen independently of the resistance of the arc at the location of the fault but only according to the maximum current that the device can withstand ..
It can be seen that if for some reason during the postage test the resistance of the fault increases sharply, the apparatus automatically sends full no-load voltage to the cable and the test continues.
Among the advantages of a postage meter produced according to the invention should be mentioned its total automation which allows operation in optimum performance conditions; in addition, the device is extremely. simple, of easy construction and use which results in the impossibility of carrying out false manipulations which could lead to its destruction, the two settings, the no-load voltage and the control current being independent, without being influenced either by the other.
In the franker which has just been described by way of example, if the magnetic amplifier is interposed in the primary circuit of the potential riser, it can however be inserted at any other location; furthermore, the potential booster et.le rectifier may be of any known type;
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
in addition, the output voltage can be rectified or alternating.
