"Explosion engine pistons"
The piston of an internal combustion engine which forms the subject of the present invention is intended to replace the pistons made of cast iron and aluminum or aluminum alloy by using all the advantages of these metals while avoiding their drawbacks. .
The accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the invention.
Figure 1 is, to the left of the axis of the drawing, a half section in elevation of a piston along a line passing through the axis of the piston pin hole and to the right of the axis of the drawing, a half section in elevation of a piston along a line perpendicular to the axis of the piston pin hole.

The body of the pedestrian is made of cast iron and comprises the bosses in which the holes of the axis e are drilled. piston.
The top of piston b is made of aluminum or aluminum alloy and has the grooves of the rings f.
There is shown at c and d grooves into which the aluminum or the aluminum alloy penetrates during the casting of the metal, these grooves are intended to fix the aluminum b to the cast iron body a of the piston.
It is known that the pistons of explosion engines are too heavy when they are made of cast iron, and that, therefore, they limit the speed of rotation of the engines, and consequently their power; moreover, they also limit the power of the engines and their thermal efficiency due to the limitation of compression.
This last disadvantage results from the weak diatherman power of the cast iron, therefore, the heat of the combustion of the gases communicated to the bottoms of the pistons not being evacuated quickly enough through the intermediary of the walls of the cylinders. to limit the compression of the fuel mixture to avoid premature ignitions.
From this point of view, the pistons in aluminum or aluminum alloy have a considerable advantage, in fact: that the coefficient of heat conductivity of cast iron is only about 40, that of aluminum is about 175. Consequently, with aluminum pistons we can give the engine a much higher compression ratio because of this advantage and because of the low specific weight of aluminum much less than that of cast iron. obtains a much higher engine speed and power and due to the higher compression ratio, better combustion of the carbureted gases, hence fuel savings.

If the aluminum piston has such advantages over the cast iron piston, it also has such drawbacks that many engine manufacturers cannot resign themselves to using it; in fact, the coefficients of mechanical strength of aluminum are relatively low, in particular the resistance to wear. As a result, the clearance of the aluminum or aluminum alloy piston in its cylinder occurs very quickly, just as the piston pin holes become oval in a very short time.
These drawbacks cause the piston made of aluminum or of aluminum alloy, whatever they may be, to be put out of use in a very limited time compared to the service life of the cast iron piston.
The piston described in the present patent avoids the disadvantages of aluminum or aluminum alloys since the body has a piston and its pin bosses are made of cast iron. Indeed, the body of the piston in contact with the cylinder being made of cast iron and the piston pin journalling in the pin holes of the cast iron bosses, I wear out the piston body in contact with the cylinder and the holes of axis e will be the same as for a piston entirely in cast iron.
The top of piston b (heavy part in all cast iron pistons) being in aluminum or aluminum alloy, the piston will be considerably lightened; in addition, the heat imparted by the combustion of the explosion gases will be rationally evacuated since this part of the piston has a much higher coefficient of conductivity than that of cast iron, consequently the compression ratio can be considerably increased.
This piston also avoids the considerable play that must be given to any aluminum or aluminum alloy piston in its cylinder due to the high coefficient of expansion of aluminum or light metals.

As has just been seen, the inventor provides for the use of aluminum and of all aluminum alloys, among which the aluminum alloy with silicon may be mentioned as giving excellent results. .
