<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
re.

Multiple propeller for flying machines, airships etc .. *,
The present invention relates to a multiple propeller for airplanes, airships, etc. which, in a known manner, consists of two propellers proper, rotating around the same geometric axis in opposite directions.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this kind ensuring a much higher efficiency than that of known devices. In this regard, the invention resides in that, between the two propellers which are constructed in such a way so that their arms, wings, vanes, etc., extend practically to the axis, is arranged a diaphragm or steering wheel provided with vanes and pool-

fixed tion, said vanes also extending practically to the axis, the diaphragm or steering wheel being carried by a hollow fixed shaft, in which the shaft of one of the propellers can journal, and around which can journal a hollow shaft which drives the second propeller.
The vanes of the diaphragm or steering wheel serve to guide the current of air caused by the first propeller, so that this current of air will be brought to the second propeller following the desired path and that this last propeller, and by following the entire device, will have a much higher performance. This new device can, therefore, be employed advantageously in flying machines (helicopters) in which the bearing or lifting force is produced by propellers rotating around vertical axes; but of course, this device can also be used for the longitudinal propulsion of airplanes, airships, etc ......
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example, partially in section and partially in elevation, a device according to the invention.
The device shown comprises two propellers 1 and 2 and a diaphragm or steerable impeller 3 interposed between these propellers. The upper propeller 1 is attached to a shaft 4 which, for the purpose of reducing the weight, may be hollow, and which passes through a second hollow fixed position shaft 5, which carries the steering wheel 3 and which in turn passes through a third hollow shaft 6 to which the lower propeller is attached. The inner shaft 4 can be journaled in the fixed shaft 5 by means of a ball bearing 7 and the outer shaft 6 is mounted on the shaft
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
5 by means of a second ball bearing 8, so that these three shafts have the same geometric axis.
The two rotary shafts 4 and 6 are coupled together and connected to a motor, by means of a suitable transmission, not shown in the drawing, of such instruction as to allow the shafts to rotate in the opposite direction.
The arms, wings or blades of the two propellers which, as can be seen in the drawing, extend practically to the shaft, must of course be inclined in the opposite direction, as shown by the sections made on the left side of the drawing. , so that, in their rotation, the two propellers generate a downward flow of air * The vanes of the steered wheel 3 are provided with journals 9 and 10 by which they are turned on the one hand in the hub 11 fixed to the shaft 5, and on the other hand in an outer ring 12. The journals 10 located at the outer ends of the blades pass through the ring 12, and protrude outside the ring.
On these protruding parts is mounted a lever 13, connected to a control or adjustment device, not shown in the drawing, and making it possible to adjust, at the same time, the inclination of all the blades in relation to the arms, wings. or vanes of both propellers.
The two propellers should, as far as possible, and as indicated in the drawing, be placed very close to the steerable wheel and have approximately the same diameter as the latter, so that the steerable wheel recoils practically the entire air current directed downwards, and produced by the upper propeller and / from the failure to conduct the air current towards the lower propeller.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
re. In this way, this last propeller will work with a much greater efficiency than when there is no steering wheel. To obtain the best possible efficiency at the different speeds of the propellers, it is preferable that the inclination of the guide vanes can be modified according to variations in the speed of rotation of the propellers.
This can, when desired, be achieved automatically, for example, by means of a centrifugal governor operating the aforementioned regulating or controlling device.
The embodiment described above and shown in the drawing should be considered only by way of example and may, of course, undergo various modifications of detail without thereby departing from the spirit of the invention. .
