<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

PERFECTED ARTIFICIAL HORN and ITS 'MANUFACTURING PROCESS.
The present invention relates to artificial horn and its manufacturing process, and aims to provide an improved process whereby a good product is obtained from materials less expensive than those employed heretofore.
According to one embodiment of the invention, the residue of nitrogenous substances is used, from which the strong glue material has been removed.
In the manufacture of glue and gelatin, starting from chrome leather which is boiled with slightly alkaline water, in the presence of a compound

of suitable magnesium, such as calcined caustic magnesia, there remains, after the glue or gelatin has been removed, a deposit or residue containing approximately 2% nitrogenous matter (with which compounds of chromium and magnesium) and about 80% water. Similar nitrogenous materials derived from animal sources (hereinafter understood as referred to as "depot" can be used.
According to the present invention, the deposit, which is pasty in nature, is first filtered through a metal screen so as to remove any foreign matter, and can then be pressed so as to reduce its water content. It is then mixed with an absorbent and binding material such as resin which has been wholly or partly sponified. casein, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, or any other suitable hygroscopic material. The mixture is then thoroughly kneaded and subjected to pressure. It is then placed in a formaldehyde solution for an appropriate time and it is rinsed and dried as will be more particularly described below.
In some cases, an organic acid, such as acetic acid, is added before the material is pressed in order to increase its flexibility, and to render completely or partially soluble any chromium which may be present.
Filling materials, such as porcelain clay, lithophane, barites, resin or the like can be incorporated into the mixture before carrying out the pressing operation.

A suitable color can be added to the material undergoing treatment either before or after the process. pressing. or both before and after.
According to one embodiment of the invention, when the nitrogenous material used is the deposit derived from the formation of the strong glue starting from the chrome leather, it is firstly filtered as indicated above. 15% resin, calculated on the finished and dried product is then mixed by kneading in a machine of known construction, after which a sufficient quantity of alkali to saponify completely or partially the resin is added.
The humidity of the mixture should be about 30%, having regard to the quality of the horn desired. This proportion can be achieved by pressing the deposit before the kneading operation, as described above.
A small amount of acetic acid is then added in order to produce the desired flexibility of the mixture, and to allow the desired proportion of chromium content to be displaced in subsequent processing.
The mixing is then carried out to a molding press of known construction in which it is subjected to a pressure of 200 to 600 atmospheres and to a temperature gradually rising to 100 degrees and then gradually falling.
When the molded material is in good condition, it is placed in a bath containing a 3% to 6% formaldehyde solution in which it is kept until completely hardened. It is then removed, rinsed and slowly air dried at a suitable temperature.
@ By means of the process described above, we obtain

of artificial horn.
According to another embodiment of the improved process 20 to 50% lactic casein calculated on the finished product can be used as a binder instead of resin and alkali.
In some cases calcium chloride or
