Abstract
Description
The invention relates to a novel method for treating phosphogypsum or other similar mineral residues. It also relates to the new products obtained using this process.
Phosphogypsum consists essentially of one of the two essential reaction products - calcium sulphate - which results from the action of sulfuric acid on ores based on calcium phosphates (apatites, fluopatitest etc ..,) , for the preparation of phosphoric acid, a substance of great importance in the chemical industry, which is the other reaction product and that which is sought after. But beside these two essential products, various other products " undesirable "are present in the reaction medium, in particular, in addition to a certain amount of the initial phosphate which has not entered into reaction, calcium fluosilicates and fluoaluminates, metal oxides, calcium in particular, combined or free, hydrated or not, various earths rare, etc etc all this mass of inorganic products being in suspension in a certain amount of water of greater or lesser importance depending on the operating conditions.
For a long time, we considered phosphogypsum as a real residue, that is to say that we did not know or that we did not want - for lack of sufficient profitability - to value it. The phosphogypsum obtained was stored or simply rejected in a heap. The current economic conditions modern ecological trends have led to find treatments truly worthy of interest - both from the financial angle and from that of health - to transform this residue of the manufacture of phosphoric acid from its calcium salt.
Such a process actually implemented consists in calcining the phosphogypsum so as above all to reduce the water content of hydrated calcium sulphate which is its essential constituent, and in transforming this salt into an anhydrous or poorly hydrated product, that is to say to say in product having a constitution close to that of plaster.
This process however requires conse-quent heaters, significant energy expenditure to reach and maintain the necessary treatment temperatures.
The present invention relates to a process for the treatment of phosphogypsum or other similar residues (that is to say of substances containing, next to various refractory mineral materials, a majority of a fixed - or semi-fixed salt of calcium, like neutral sulphate), said analogous residues being hereinafter, within the meaning of the present invention, grouped under the single name of phosphogypsum, a process which is devoid of the drawbacks presented by the processes hitherto existing, it is -b to say which is of convenient and economic implementation, and which leads to new products easily transformable, usable and recoverable.
The process according to the invention essentially consists in kneading, in the presence of water, the phosphogypsum resulting from the reaction for the manufacture of phosphoric acid, with quicklime at ambient or moderate temperature until the lime is released from the treated product. combined it contains and, under the action of the present water> to pass all this lime to the state of slaked lime, which is finally, by spontaneous division, intimately mixed with the sulphate of lime present which serves of binder. The whole is thus brought to be in the form of an extremely fine powder whose particles of larger dimensions are between a few tens of microns - 40 for example - and 200 microns.
produits. The operating mode of the transformation of the phosphogypsum into finished product ready to bag, is carried out, according to the conditions of recoveryj in the following way L - phosphogypsum recovered at the outlet of the filters
This phosphogypsum has a water content of around 30%. It is
sent to a mixer where a quantity of lime is incorporated
live between 20 to 50% by weight of the amount of phos
phogypsum. Products are mixed for a short time
in a silo designed to recover the heat of reaction of
products.
15 %.This heat is recovered and used to dry the phosphogypsum at
the filter outlet to lower its water content by about
15%.
The percentage of lime to be incorporated decreases by around 15%,
increasing the profitability of the finished product. An anti device
pollution is installed above the silo.
The sampled product has a water content of around 10%
and consequently, an amount of lime of the order of 10 to 20% is
incorporated in the mixer,
The final product can be bagged for later use.
Examples of the application of the new product thus obtained are given below, for the production of compact and solid blocks capable of being used inter alia as building elements in a manner analogous, for example, to currently known plaster tiles. .
- Exemple 1
On utilise les produits suivants
- 1 000 grammes de phosphogypse traité,
- 50 grammes de sulfate de potasse,
- 100 grammes de ciment,
- 2 grammes de méthyléthylcellulose,
- 500 grammes d'eau.- Example 1
We use the following products
- 1000 grams of phosphogypsum treated,
- 50 grams of potassium sulphate,
- 100 grams of cement,
- 2 grams of methyl ethyl cellulose,
- 500 grams of water.
Mix and conform in molds corresponding to blocks 9 obtain. Demoulding can generally take place within 10 minutes and then blocks which are not yet fully cured but which can be handled are obtained.
The solidification process takes place under increasing temperature, which probably corresponds to the hydration of certain components.
The blocks obtained, after a period of 28 days, then have a compressive strength of the order of 100 to 150 ba / cm2,
These blocks show practically only minimal water uptake and can be used as construction elements.
A faster setting can be obtained by increasing the percentage of potassium sulphate, for example, up to a maximum value of 10% by weight of phosphogypsum allowing to obtain an almost instant mass setting.
Insofar as it is desired to delay solidification, it is possible to use, as a retarding agent, alkali carbonates, and in particular neutral sodium carbonate added to a maximum amount of 1 7 ..
Depending on the working conditions, the percentage of methylcellulose can be reduced to 0.5 / 0O.
- Exemple 2
On malaxe comme précédemment
- 1 000 grammes de phosphogypse déshydraté,
- 50 grammes de sulfate de potasse,
- 100 grammes de chaux hydraulique,
- 2 grammes de méthyléthylcellulose,
- 500 grammes d'eau.- Example 2
We mix as before
- 1000 grams of dehydrated phosphogypsum,
- 50 grams of potassium sulphate,
- 100 grams of hydraulic lime,
- 2 grams of methyl ethyl cellulose,
- 500 grams of water.
It is conformed in molds to obtain massive and compact blocks having, after 28 days, a compressive strength of between 80 and 100 bars / cm2.
les mes agents durcisseur ou retardateur peuvent ici aus8i entre employés. my hardening or retarding agents can here also between employees.
- Exemple 3
A composition identical to Example 1 is used and the product is introduced into a spraying machine. A coating or a hardening coating is thus produced in a few hours and which can be projected onto a small thickness, of the order of a few millimeters, or large, of the order of several centimeters, or even ten depending on the percentage of agent. hardener. Such a coating shows practically only a small, if not minimal, water uptake and can be applied to the exterior faces in replacement of a traditional cement coating.
The same composition can be worked by hand as a coating product or as an air binder given the possibility of precisely adjusting its setting time.
- Exemple 4
The same composition is used as in Example 2 and used by hand or with a spraying machine for application as a coating or binder.
In the last two examples above, it is also possible to use a hardening agent or setting retarder depending on the setting time to be retained.
It goes without saying that the products obtained, which can thus be used as binders, hardening with water, are capable of being added with various ingredients (fillers, natural or artificial resins, protective agents against heat or light, flame retardants, various pigments and dyes, etc.
In all of the foregoing, the invention has been described more particularly applied to phosphogypsum resulting from the attack on ores based on calcium phosphate by sulfuric acid, with a view to the preparation of phosphoric acid. As already said, the process according to the invention also applies with regard to other residues of the same kind, containing a fixed salt, or semi-fixed or approximately, of calcium and various other constituents also fixed.
The invention is not limited to the examples described, since various modifications can be made thereto without departing from its scope.
