<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

PROTECTION PROFILE
The present invention relates to a protective profile for the edge of a part, said profile comprising a base to which two wings are connected in an elastically deformable material so as to define a hollow space intended to receive the edge to be protected.
Currently known are elongated sections with a U-shaped section made of an elastically deformable material serving as a protective element for the edge or edge of parts during p. ex. transportation. The edge of the part to be protected is introduced inside the hollow space provided in the U-shaped profile between the two aisles so that the profile covers the edge and protects it against impact.
A disadvantage of the U-section profiles is that they must be fixed to the part to be protected by fixing means such as adhesive tape. The installation of these fixing means represents an additional work and a loss
EMI1.1
of time during packaging. In addition, after unpacking the packages, it is still necessary to remove the fixing means which are not always easily or completely removed from the part to be protected.
The object of the present invention is to provide a profile adhering itself to the part to be protected that cap.
According to the invention, this objective is achieved by a protective profile for the edge of a part, said profile comprising a base to which two aisles are connected in an elastically deformable material so as to define a hollow space intended to receive the edge to be protected, characterized in that the aisles define a throttling section followed by a widening section towards the outside.
One of the advantages of such a profile is that it gets stuck on the edge or the edge of the part to be protected thanks to the constriction of the section near the free end of the wings. At this point, the distance between the two wings is less than the thickness of the edge or the edge of the part to be protected which the cap covers.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
streamlined. As the two aisles are made of an elastically deformable material, the aisles exert a certain pressure on the part and thus retain the profile in position on the edge. respectively on the edge of the part to be protected. It is therefore not necessary to fix the U-shaped profile on the part by another fixing means.
The fact that the profile is not fixed to the edge of the part to be protected by fixing means but that it is stuck on this part makes it possible to remove it more easily after use.
Another advantage of the U-shaped profile is that it is easily placed on the edge or on the edge of the part to be protected. Indeed, although the section of the hollow space is narrower near the free ends of the wings than that of the edge of the part to be protected, it is not necessary to manually spread the wings before putting the profile in place on the edge to be protected since the edge of the part is first engaged in the section of the wings which flare outwards. The free end therefore forms lips which are spaced apart, i.e. that the opening between the lips being greater than the distance between the two wings at the level of the constriction, the edge of the part easily engages in the space between the wings.
As the aisles are made of an elastically deformable material, the aisles move apart when the edge is pushed into the hollow space between the wings. The profile can therefore be put in place in a single manipulation.
Yet another advantage of the profile is that one can use the same profile for parts of different thicknesses. In other words, the profile does not need to be manufactured specifically for use respectively for a given part. Indeed, as the material of the wings respectively of the entire profile is elastically deformable and as the lips forming the free end of the wings act as a funnel, the profile can cover parts which have different thicknesses. Therefore, a reduced number of profiles is required.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to a first advantageous embodiment, the profile is made of foam. The foam has the advantage of being elastically deformable, of being light and easy to produce.
According to another preferred embodiment, the foam comprises one or more of the polymers chosen from the group consisting of LDPE (low density polyethylene), LLDPE (linear low density polyethylene), HDPE (high density polyethylene), PP (polypropylene ), PU (polyurethane), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), PS (polystyrene), SAN (Styrene acrylonitrile), EVA (vinyl ethylene acetate), EBA (butyl ethylene acetate), and EAA (ethylene acetate) .
Advantageously, the outer surface of the base of the U-shaped profile is convex.
According to yet another advantageous embodiment, the external surface of the base c. i.e. the surface opposite to that which carries the two wings has a recess. When pressure is applied to the base between the two aisles, the material forming the base is compressed. Due to this recess, the compressive strength increases as the base is compressed. Indeed, when the base is compressed, the elastically deformable material is crushed and the bearing surface of the base increases due to the gradual disappearance of the recess. Therefore, it is necessary to compress more and more elastically deformable material and the compressive strength thus gradually increases.
This property is especially advantageous for the packaging of electronic products which are sensitive to shocks because the shocks are gradually absorbed. The function of the progressive damping obviously depends on the elastic properties of the material used for the production of the profile but also on the shape of the recess. A uniform progression of the damping is obtained if the recess is concave.
Thereafter, various advantageous embodiments of the invention are given by way of example with reference to the figures in which:
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
Fig. 1: shows a perspective view of an advantageous embodiment of a profile made of an elastically deformable material.
Fig. 2: shows a perspective view of another advantageous embodiment of an elongated section with a U-section
Fig. 1 shows an elongated profile 10 made of an elastically deformable material. In this example, the profile has a U-shaped section. Of course, the profile does not necessarily have to have a symmetrical section. It can just as easily be asymmetrical, the wings being able to p. ex. have different lengths or the base conform to the shape of the edge of the part to be protected.
The inner surface 20 of the base of the profile 10 lying between the two aisles is planar and the outer surface 30 of the base is convex. The wings 40 extend substantially perpendicular to the base and form a constriction 50 near the free end of the aisles 40. The free ends of the aisles form a flare 60 in the form of a funnel, allowing easy application of the profile on the room to protect.
The base / wing 70 external connections are convex connections, the base / wing 80 Interior connections are rounded corners and the wing forms a right angle with respect to the interior surface of the base 20. The envelope line of the exterior surface of the wings follows the envelope line of the interior surface of the aisles. The profile section therefore looks like a tulip.
Of course, the shape, the dimensions of the profile and the thickness of the material can vary depending on the use of the profile.
Fig. 02 shows an elongated section with a tulip-shaped section 90 with a surface of the inner base 20 that is flat and a surface of the outer base 30 having a concave recess 100. The wings 40 extending substantially parallel and perpendicular to the base form a constriction 50 near the free end of the aisles 40. The free ends of the wings form rounded lips 60 making it possible to easily introduce the part to be protected inside the space provided between the two wings. The part to be protected is
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
stuck inside the hollow space at the throttle 50 near the lips. The concave recess 100 is arranged in the exterior surface of the base, i.e. in the surface opposite to that which carries the two aisles.
When pressure is exerted on the inner surface 20 of the base between the two wings, the base is compressed, the elastically deformable material which forms the base is gradually crushed and the recess inside the base gradually disappears. It is necessary to compress more and more elastically deformable material so that the compressive strength increases in proportion to the pressure applied.
The function of the progressive damping obviously depends on the elastic properties of the material used for the production of the U-section profile and its thickness but also on the shape of the recess. A uniform progression of the damping is obtained if the recess is concave.
