<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
polypropyleen of polyester.
Evenwel
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

WOVEN CARPETS AND
METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING THE SAME The invention relates to the manufacture of woven carpets.
Woven carpets are manufactured by passing a polypropylene yarn between warp threads and weft threads. In known woven carpets, the warp thread consists of cotton and the weft thread normally of jute. A latex underlay or a finish is applied to the back, which is necessary to make the carpet stiff.
A drawback of such known carpets is that their production requires two process phases, in which the fabric is first made and then the underlay or finish is applied separately.
In addition, jute has the disadvantage of breaking easily, and that its use in carpet manufacturing involves a lot of dust. Furthermore, jute must be twisted to allow the use of these in weaving.
An object of the present invention is to propose a new type of woven carpet, which is self-rigid, without the need for a dressing or an underlay to be applied underneath.
This object is achieved by making use of synthetic weft threads, namely polyolefins, b. v. b.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
polypropylene or polyester. The warp threads can b. v. b. consist of cotton or a combination of cotton and polyolefin, while the pile yarn may consist of polypropylene. The woven carpet thus obtained offers the advantage that its manufacture is considerably simplified and, consequently, economical, since no underlay or finish must be applied underneath. Furthermore, the woven carpet according to the invention offers the advantage that it is also really environmentally friendly because the production process does not involve dust or waste.
Another object of the invention is to provide woven carpets which can be fully recycled.
Natural products and plastic are used in known carpets. The disadvantage of this is that such carpets cannot be fully recycled because in this case an impure plastic is obtained and therefore entails a burden on the environment.
In order to make the woven carpets according to the invention fully recyclable, polyolefins are used not only for the pile yarn and the weft thread, but also for the warp thread.
By abandoning natural products and only using plastic, namely polyolefins, an almost 100% pure granulate is obtained during recycling of the carpet, which can for instance be reused for manufacturing the underlay of new carpets b. v. b. tufted or needle-punched carpets, which offer both economic benefits and advantages in terms of lower environmental impact. However
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the obtained granulate can for instance also be used in the plastics industry for applications in injection and extrusion.
It should also be emphasized that woven carpets are obtained with the invention, which are completely waterproof.
A particular aspect of the invention consists in using fibrillated tapes for the weft thread. Said fibrillated tapes are cut from polyolefin films. The advantage of this is that the fibrillated tapes can be used untwisted, which offers economic benefits. Indeed, the usual burlap is expensive.
In addition, fibrillated tapes can be stored in large bobbins and thus delivered, which facilitates the manufacturing process and thus a tremendous reduction in manufacturing cost.
A further advantage of the 100% plastic woven carpet according to the invention is that it is possible to give up the usual edging of the carpet and simply fix the thread ends by automatic welding.
The scope of protection is determined by the content of the appended claims.
