EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

EMI1.1
Packaging device for cheese like a cheese of the "Swiss" type,
The invention relates to a packaging device for cheese comprising a strip surrounding the product and made of a food-grade plastic.
Such a packaging device is known, for example, from FR-A-2 486 037 and it is intended for ripened cheeses which must be aerated on all their faces and can therefore only be supported or packaged on or in a permeable product. to the air.
For fresh dairy products, such as cheeses of the "Swiss" type or the like, and without this indication however having any limiting nature whatsoever, packaging already constituted by a jar of thermoformed plastic material has been known for a very long time. in which is housed the cheese with interposition between it and the jar of a strip of paraffin sorbate paper having the function, at the same time, of absorbing the exudate of the wet product, of allowing the easy release of the product for its consumption, and to bring to said product the sorbate necessary for its good conservation.
However, such packaging is not without drawbacks insofar as the paper which constitutes it tends to modify the taste of the product which it protects, and all the more so since the date of consumption is more distant from the date of manufacture. on the one hand, and that this effect is reinforced by paraffin and sorbate, on the other hand. In addition, when the product is extracted from its packaging, it is sometimes noted that the paper strip is excessively impaled, which, made fragile by its humidification, is subject to tears which do not always allow it to be easily removed.
Finally, the presence of paraffin on the strip of the known packaging results in significant fouling of the strip guide system in the packaging machines, fouling which can be the cause of unsatisfactory operation of the chains. packaging of fresh products.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The problem therefore arises of providing, for products of the type under consideration, a packaging device which does not have the drawbacks mentioned above of the known devices and which, in particular, is inert on the organoleptic level, makes it possible to ensure the good quality of the packaged product without the addition of a preservative or fungicide such as sorbate, allows a simple release from the mold by the consumer while being simultaneously easy to use on packaging machines.
The problem is solved, according to the invention, by the fact that for a cheese of the "Swiss" type or the like, the strip is shaped according to a cylindrical case of a plastic material belonging to the family of polyolefins, polyesters, styrenic polymers or polyvinyl chlorides and their derivatives and is sufficiently sterile to manufacture even to allow its use without special precautions on the packaging lines for fresh dairy products, without the addition of preservative.
While the use of a paper strip did not seem to be avoidable, notwithstanding the drawbacks mentioned above, the device according to the invention surprisingly overcomes the drawbacks associated with such a material by providing packaging satisfactory although they are made of a material which does not have the characteristics of absorbing moisture from the paper.
In a preferred embodiment, said material is a polypropylene sheet or film with a thickness between 40 and 80 μm and a specific weight between 0.45 and 0.65 g / cm 3.
A particularly preferred embodiment provides for making the packaging device from a sheet or film of pearlescent polypropylene, that is to say from a material obtained by extrusion from granules of poly-

propylene and expansion additives.
Such a material which, in addition, can be easily printed, is of particular interest for the presentation of a decoration or a marking intended to be seen through the thermoformed jar intended to receive the product to be packaged and its protective strip.
The invention will be better understood from the following description of exemplary embodiments.
EXAMPLE 1
Fresh dairy products such as "Swiss" type cheeses are packaged by a packaging machine in thermoformed polystyrene jars, joined by a collar on which is then heat sealed, in a manner known per se, a sealing cap.
Before filling, each jar is lined internally with a band substantially matching its internal surface obtained by cutting and shaping a polypropylene sheet manufactured by extrusion (and thus relatively sterile) having the following characteristics: thickness: 60 μm specific weight : 0.55 g / cm3 elongation at longitudinal break: 120% elongation at transverse break: 30% moisture uptake: <0.1%.
The packaged product is kept under normal temperature conditions for this kind of food for 24 days. At the end of this period and after removal of the closure seal, it is found that the cheese surrounded by its strip is extracted from its jar by demolding without difficulty. It can be seen that the cheese does not adhere to the strip and that the strip is separated therefrom without practically ever tearing.
The tasting of the packaged product does not reveal any change in its taste, as it appears when using a strip of paper.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The strips of the packaging device according to the invention are cut from reels adapted to the width of the packaging machine used and then shaped according to cylindrical cases without incident of operation.
EXAMPLE II
The procedure is as in Example I, but using as material constituting the strip of the packaging device a sheet of low density polyethylene nonwoven with a thickness of 50 microns.
Demoulding tests after 24 days of storage of the product show, here too, that the fresh cheese is very easily extracted from its jar on the one hand, that the strip of low density polyethylene does not adhere to the cheese on the other hand, and that it is completely devoid of any taste alteration similar to that conferred by the paper strips.
In both examples reported above, the fresh cheese does not show any trace of microbial development and this notwithstanding the absence of preservative or fungicide on the protective strips.
