<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Title: Process for producing special coloring effects on textile hammers, and mixtures of dyes for this purpose.
Processes for producing special coloring effects, in particular on carpets, advantageously on carpets tufted in synthetic and natural polyamides: are sufficiently well known and in use for years. Such applications are described for example in patent GB-2,043,708 and recently also in patent application DE-A-4,219,317.
The conduct of operations in conjunction with dyes and selected chemicals has led to a new flowering of printing techniques throughout the carpet industry. The resulting articles differ from the articles produced according to traditional printing techniques, essentially by their enhanced dyeing liveliness and by the improvement of their quality.
The operating procedures are merging. on the application of complex metal dyes, advantageously monosulfonated and disulfonated dyes having limited values of K ′ at pH 6. The dyes are particularly sensitive to cationic adjuvants and their fixing behavior is very clearly influenced by the pH value and by the quantities of adjuvants. These properties lead, in the event of displacement by cationic printing pastes, to obtaining white and colored reserves on the substrates.
In addition to the sensitivity to pH, the colored elements, with large molecules, such as they are cited in the patents, show in a cold application medium a low tendency to fix, which is used to move these dyes by adjuvants and. by adjusting the pH value, even more so to obtain a white reserve. Dyes are therefore used in particular which have a K's value greater than 5 at a pH value of 6, advantageously greater than 6.5.
In the bath or the paste containing reserve-obtaining agents, anionic dyes or optical brightening agents having a
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
r value. ettement lower than K'at pH 6, to produce colored reserves, in particular products having a pH value of K'inferior to 4, these dyes being practically not influenced by the reserve-obtaining agent that we use.
Due to the risk of pollution of the environment by processes, textiles and waste water, during the aforementioned use of complex metal dyes, there is a tendency to avoid, where it is always possible, such dyes. The transition to disulfonated acid dyes devoid of metals and the use of such dyes having high CV values similar to those of the abovementioned complex metal dyes did not lead to the desired goal, since this resulted in too low a formation. and accumulation in medium to fairly dark shades, and, thus, it was necessary to ask questions concerning the reproducibility of the process unlike the above-mentioned ways of operating.
It has just turned out, surprisingly, that for the background dyeing with individual dyes containing acid groups and without metals or with mixtures of such dyes, especially comprising two sulfo groups having at pH 6 values of K '> to 4.0, advantageously values between 4.5 and 6.5 and having molecular weights of free acids ranging from 450 to 850, molecular weights of sodium salts from 480 to 900, results are obtained comparable with regard to the white and colored reserves. Selected acid dyes of this kind still offer ecological advantages thanks to better depletion of the bath.
These dyes can belong to all the classes, in particular to those of the azo dyes and anthraquinone dyes, they can present reactive groups, but preferably, they are not however reactive acid dyes (see in Color Index "Acid Dyestuffs" ( Acid dyes)).
Disulfonic acid dyes
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
belonging to these domains, molecular weights and K'values at pH 6, however, exhibit poor tone-in-tone behavior in trichromatic behavior, since in most cases there are quite large differences in their K'value at pH 6 , these values ranging from 3.5 to 9.0.
Thanks to corresponding mixtures of these elements, however, surprisingly compensated values of K ′ at pH 6 are obtained which, in their turn, lie in the range described above at values greater than 4.0 with, at the same time, a very good behavior in combination tone on tone. For good white and colored reserves, are therefore determining not only the factors of the individual elements but also the behavior of momentary affinity or repulsion or repression of the dyes applied in combination on the background, which is manifested by the values characterizing the mixture .
In addition, mixtures on the bottom dye manifest, thanks to the addition of polyvinyl pyrrolidone,
EMI3.1
significantly better solubility and stability in the reserve baths5. Polyvinyl pyrrolidone improves the dissolution behavior, it decreases the substantivity / fixation and thus allows a better displacement of dyes.
Adding a small amount of winding oil (commercially available) can be advantageous for removing dust from dry dye mixtures.
The elements of mixtures according to the invention behave all the better as they present from the start a clearly better aptitude for combination, a wider dye application of the color, a better reserve and simultaneously a better degree of fixing according to the total fixing process. Their application is favorable to the environment and gives finished articles which do not contain metals and which can therefore be disposed of without fear. According to the articles PA ("nylon") and WO from the inside and from the outside, the solidities in the wet and
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
the light obtained by this way of operating can be compared to that of complex metal dyes.
The invention now relates to a process for producing special coloring effects on textile materials into natural or synthetic polyamides by application of dyes and, locally, of products for forming reserves, a process which is characterized in that uses, for background dyeing or coloring, mixtures of dyes without metals, containing one or two sulfonic acid group (s), having pH values of K's greater than 4.0 and, for the formation of reserves , alkoxylated (fatty acids) -alkylamines optionally quaternized or protonated. The cited mixtures of dyes also constitute an object of the present invention.
Advantageously, the baths for the base dye also contain a small amount (up to 5 g / l) of a thickener (commercially available, for example based on carob flour ether) and a wetting agent. penetration (for example a nonionogenic product for fixing ethylene oxide on a higher alkyl phenol). The thickener prevents the base liquid from entering the surfaces / areas treated by the reserve forming agent before fixing.
The alkoxylated (fatty acids) -alkylamines serving as a reserve-forming agent are commercially available products (mention may be made, for example, of the trade names "Thiotan TR" and "Thiotan TRN") and these products meet, for example, the formula
EMI4.1
where m is 0 to 6, n is 2 or 3, x, y, and z are each 1 to 100 and together 10 to
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
100,
R represents a C1 to C24 alkyl or alkenyl residue,
A represents an ethylene or propylene residue
Al represents an ethylene or propylene residue or, once a styrene residue, and
Xl represents a group -CO- or a direct bond
These compounds are used as such in the form of their free bases or in protonated or quaternized form.
These products are for example quaternized with an alkyl halide or a C1 to C4 alkyl sulphate or with benzyl chloride.
The pH of the base dye bath is advantageously adjusted, for example using acetic acid or formic acid, to a value of 7 to 8; if white reserves are desired (paste of the reserve forming agent without dye), a correction of the pH value of the pastes is in most cases not necessary. In the case of colored reserves (when the paste of the reserve forming agent also contains dye), it must have a pH of 5 to 6 in the substrate, which can be obtained by a slight acidification of the printing paste.
The printing paste generally contains 1.5 to 5.0% of a thickener, based on the weight of the paste.
The following table indicates the molecular weights, the parts by weight of the individual dyes of the mixture, the Ksi values at pH 6 of the individual dyes and of the mixtures of these dyes.
