EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
EMI8.1

<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

EMI1.1
The subject of the present invention is a milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide having a high content of dry matter.
It is known to prepare lime and / or magnesium hydroxide milks by reacting CaO, MgO, CaO-MgO with water or by mixing calcium hydroxide and / or magnesium in an aqueous medium .
When preparing lime milk by reacting quicklime with water, the average size of the calcium hydroxide particles is very small, so that to ensure sufficient fluidity or pumpability of the milk, the content of particles of calcium hydroxide in milk should be less than less than 25 to 35% by weight.
It is also known that by increasing the size of the calcium hydroxide particles, the specific surface thereof decreases and that by increasing the size of the calcium hydroxide particles, it is possible to reduce the viscosity of the milk. of lime or even for a given viscosity to increase the dry matter content of a milk.
To increase the size of the Ca (OH) 2 particles and therefore decrease the viscosity of the milk of lime, it has already been proposed in document US 4, 464, 363 to quench quicklime in an aqueous medium in the presence of 0 , 5 to 5% by weight of calcium sulphate relative to the weight of quicklime to be quenched. In this document, quicklime is quenched until the temperature of the reaction medium reaches approximately 85 C.
Tests have shown that lime milks
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
obtained by such a process could have a dry matter content of the order of 40-45% maximum.
As specified on page 335 of Chemistry and Technology of Lime and Limestone, the use of SO-containing water for slaking quicklime reduces the rate of hydration of lime and causes the formation of large particles which sediment quickly. Lime milks prepared by quicklime quenching in the presence of CASH 4 exhibit, due to this rapid sedimentation, only relative stability over time.
The present invention aims to remedy these drawbacks. It therefore relates to a milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide having a high dry matter content, in particular greater than 50% by weight, this milk being however stable over time. The present invention therefore relates to a milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide having a viscosity of less than 1500 centipoise (15 Pa. S) and a dry matter content of more than 50% by weight.
Such milk can be obtained by quenching CaO, MgO, CaO-MgO using water in the presence of an anion of a mineral acid, in particular SO. and Cl and in the presence of a polyanion.
According to a feature of the milk according to the invention, it contains at least one anion of a mineral or inorganic acid, in particular of a strong acid and advantageously of an acid chosen from sulfuric acid, sulfurous acid , hydrochloric acid, and at least one polyanion.
The mineral acid anion which is advantageously SO-, SO., Cl or a mixture thereof is present in the milk of lime at a concentration which is advantageously between 1 and 50 g / l, preferably between 6 and 30 gel.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Advantageously, said anion comes from a calcium or magnesium salt of mineral acid, in
EMI3.1
particular of Cad-, MgCl ,,, CaSO, (preferably in the form CaSO.-1/2 H ,, 0), MgSO. (preferably in the form MgS04. 7H20) and their mixtures.
The polyanion present in a particular embodiment of a milk according to the invention is advantageously a polymer or copolymer comprising anionic monomeric units derived from monomers belonging to the group comprising acrylic acid and its salts, methacrylic acid and its salts , vinylbenzylsulfonic acid and its salts, 2-acrylamino-2-methylpropane-sulfonic acid and its salts, 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate and its salts. The concentration of said polyanion in milk is for example from 1 to 50 g / l but is preferably between 5 and 30 g / 1.
Preferred polyanions are polyacrylates, polymethacrylates, copolymers of acrylic and methacrylic esters and mixtures thereof.
Milks according to the invention may in embodiments have a viscosity of between 500 centipoise (5 Pa. S) and 1500 centipoise (15 Pa. S) and a dry matter content greater than 60% by weight.
According to another characteristic of the milks according to the invention, they have a large content of large particles such as particles having a particle size greater than 100 microns. Thus, in embodiments, the milk according to the invention contains particles of calcium hydroxide and / or magnesium of which at least 20% by weight, preferably 30% by weight, have a particle size greater than 100 microns. Despite this high proportion of calcium hydroxide particles
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
and / or magnesium of large particle size, the milks according to the invention have good stability or significant resistance to sedimentation, thereby facilitating its transport and use.
The present invention also relates to a process for the preparation of a milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide, in particular of a milk having a dry matter content greater than 50% by weight and a viscosity less than 1500 centipoises (15 Pa. s), that is to say a lime milk according to the invention.
According to the process according to the invention, calcium and / or magnesium oxide is quenched by means of an aqueous solution containing at least one anion of a mineral acid, advantageously a strong mineral acid and in particular SO3 , SO4, Cl or a mixture thereof and a polyanion is added to the aqueous solution before, during or at the end of the quenching reaction of the calcium and / or magnesium oxide.
Advantageously during or at the end of the reaction, a polymer or copolymer is added comprising anionic monomer units derived from the monomers belonging to the group comprising acrylic acid and its salts, methacrylic acid and its salts, acid 2 -acrylamino-2-methylpropane-sulfonic and its salts, 2-sulfoethyl methacrylate and its salts.
The quenching reaction of CaO, MgO or their mixtures is advantageously carried out by means of a solution containing from 1 to 50 g / l, preferably of
EMI4.1
6 to 30 g / l of O'ou / and Cl
During this quenching reaction, the reaction medium is subjected to stirring and the temperature of said medium is maintained at a temperature below 40 ° C., preferably at 30 ° C.
Advantageously, the reaction is controlled
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
quenching by measuring the viscosity of the reaction medium. Thus, for example, calcium and / or magnesium oxide is added to the solution until a viscosity of between 300 and 1200 centipoise (3 and 12 Pa. S) is obtained.
In one embodiment of a method according to the invention, the calcium and / or magnesium oxide is quenched in an aqueous solution containing at least one anion of a mineral acid, in particular SO. and C1 until a reaction mixture having a viscosity of between 300 and 1200 centipoise is obtained, then a polyanion preferably chosen from a polyacrylate or polymethacrylate or a copolymer of acrylic and methacrylic esters or a mixture of these is added to the mixture -this so as to reduce said viscosity, and further adding calcium and / or magnesium oxide to the mixture so as to extinguish it until a viscosity of between 300 and 1200 centipoise is obtained.
In a particular form of the process according to the invention, the medium is subjected after the stages of extinction and addition of the polyanion, to a grinding. This grinding operation can be carried out before or after a step of separating a solid phase from the reaction medium and optionally a drying step. Grinding is said to be wet if it is carried out before the separation step and a drying step.
After wet grinding, it is possible to obtain a milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide containing a set of micro-sheets of calcium hydroxide and / or magnesium.
The present invention therefore also relates to a milk of lime comprising microfoliates
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
calcium hydroxide and / or magnesium. Such micro-sheets advantageously have a thickness of less than 0.5 micron, preferably of 0.3 micron and may in embodiments have a lower face and an upper face parallel to each other, the surface of said faces being less than 200
EMI6.1
. 2 of f''100'2 microns, preferably 100 microns
If after such wet grinding or if before grinding a solid phase-liquid phase separation of the medium is carried out and advantageously a drying of the solid phase, it is possible to prepare micro-sheets of calcium hydroxide and / or magnesium.
Such micro-sheets advantageously have a thickness of less than 0.5 microns (preferably less than 0.3 microns) and have a lower face and an upper face parallel to each other, the surface of said faces being less than 200, of
EMI6.2
2 preferably 100 microns 2.
If the reaction medium is not subjected to grinding but only to phase separation such as filtration, grains or particles of Ca (OH) 2 are obtained in the form of an amalgam of micro-sheets, in particular micro-sheets of thickness less than 0.5 micron, preferably 0.3 micron. 2 less than 200, preferably 100 microns 2.
In one embodiment, such grains have an average particle size greater than 20 μm, preferably 50 μm. Preferably, more than 80% of the particles or grains have a particle size greater than 20 microns.
Particularly advantageous grains are those having a particle size greater than 100,
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
preferably at 250 microns.
Such grains, according to the invention, have large pores (for example from 30 to 50 microns) so that they are advantageously used to capture or trap large particles.
Other details and characteristics of the invention will emerge from the following description in which reference is made to examples of preparation and to the attached drawings.
In these drawings, Figure 1 is a schematic view of an installation which can be used for the preparation of a milk according to the invention, and Figures 2 and 3 are views of a grain of calcium hydroxide according to the invention.
The installation used for the preparation of milk according to the invention comprises a tank 1 provided with a cooling jacket 11 and an agitator 12 (preferably of the anchor type). The calcium and / or magnesium oxide or the calcium and / or magnesium hydroxide which is placed in a hopper 2 is brought to said tank 1 by a worm screw 3. The speed of the agitator is for example between 200 and 600 revolutions / minute.
Water, the anion of a mineral acid and the polyanion are brought respectively to said tank 1 by conduits 41, 42 and 43.
The tank 1 has, near its bottom, a discharge pipe 5 for the milk of lime and / or magnesium hydroxide formed.
Advantageously, the tank 1 is also provided with a viscosity measuring device 6, this device 6 being connected to a servo system 7 acting on the motor 8 driving the worm 3. This system 7 allows during
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
control and adjust the amount of CaO, MgO, Ca (OH) 2 and / or Mg (OH) 2 to obtain the predetermined viscosity level, that is to say at the end of the operation, a product having a determined viscosity.
A temperature detector 9 is connected to a control system 10 of a valve 21 for introducing a cooling fluid into the casing 11 of the tank 1. In this way, it is possible to ensure that the temperature of the mixture contained in the tank does not exceed a determined temperature, in particular 40 C, preferably 30 C.
Preparation examples Example n l
To an aqueous solution containing
EMI8.1
10 g / l CaSO .. 1/2 H20 of calcium oxide. During the exothermic hydration reaction, the temperature of the medium was maintained at around 40 C. This hydration reaction was carried out with stirring (rotation speed: 400 revolutions / minute).
The calcium sulphate present in the solution inhibits the hydration reaction, that is to say reduces the rate of hydration and therefore allows better evacuation of the heat released during the reaction.
When the viscosity of the reaction mixture was 800 centipoise, sodium polyacrylate was added in an amount corresponding to 1% of the desired weight of calcium hydroxide in the milk of lime. After this addition, the stirred mixture had a viscosity of 300 centipoise (3 Pa. S). Then calcium oxide was added to the mixture until its viscosity was about 800 centipoise. During this hydration reaction of

calcium oxide, the temperature of the reaction medium was maintained at around 40 C.
The milk thus prepared had a concentration

in Ca (OH) 2 of about 65%.

g / l of Cash4. 1/2 H2O and 6 g / l of sodium polyacrylate and that in a second step quicklime was quenched using this solution until a viscosity of 800 centipoise was obtained. The milk thus obtained had a Ca (OH) 2 concentration of approximately 65-70% by weight.
By filtration, Ca (OH) 2 particles were recovered from this milk as shown in FIGS. 2 and 3. These particles are in the form of a set or amalgam of microfilms.
These micro-sheets had a thickness of the order of 0.1 to 0.2 µm. These micro-sheets had a lower face and an upper face parallel to each other. The surface of said faces was about 25

2 to 50 m2.
The following table gives the particle size distribution of the milk of lime prepared in this example and the particle size distribution of a milk of conventional type.

EMI10.2
As seen from the table above,
the milk according to the invention of this example is characterized by the presence of particles or grains whose average particle size is far greater than 20 μm (approximately 50 μm). In fact, more than 80% by weight of the particles have a particle size greater than 20 μm. A large number of particles have a particle size greater than 250 μm.

Example 3
Example 1 was repeated except that a solution containing 20 g / l of MgSO4 was used. 7.20 hrs instead of a solution containing 10 g / l of CASO 4 1/2 H2 0.
We were thus able to prepare a lime milk containing
EMI11.1
about 65% by weight of Ca (OH) 2.
Despite the presence of a large quantity of grains having a particle size greater than 200 μm, it has been observed that such a lime milk has excellent stability, namely more than 24 hours in the absence of agitation and more than 15 days in the presence of slight agitation (100 revolutions / minute).
The following table shows the viscosity of the milk of lime placed in a tank and subjected to slight agitation.

EMI12.2
This example shows that, although it is not possible to produce grains of Ca (OH) 2 according to the invention in the absence of a polyanion (sodium polycarbonate), CASH 4 makes it possible to reduce the speed of lime hydration reaction and therefore reduce the rate of heat release during this reaction.
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
Other examples of the preparation process according to the invention have been carried out. In these examples, Cad ,,, MgCl ,, were used as materials releasing an anion from a mineral acid; sodium and / or ammonium salts of polycarboxylic acid and mixed salts of polymeric acrylic acid as materials releasing a polyanion, and MgO and CaO. MgO as starting material to be quenched for milk preparation.
These examples have shown that by using these materials it is possible to obtain milks with a high dry matter concentration (60 to 70%) and having a viscosity of less than 1000 centipoises (lOPa.s).
The whitewash according to the invention, in particular thanks to the shape and the size of its particles (micro-leaves, macropores, large particle size, low water content (25 to 30%) is advantageously used for the treatment of industrial effluents such as as acidic effluents (liquid or gaseous), effluents containing heavy metals, etc.
The grains according to the invention in particular the part of these having a particle size greater than 200 microns are advantageously used to make filter beds. Such grains have a low specific surface (9 m2 / g against 20 to 25 m2 / g for Ca (OH) 2 of a conventional milk) but have macropores or cages of 20 to 50 μm.
Finally, by wet grinding of the grains of a milk of lime, filtration and drying, a mixture of micro sheets of was obtained. Ca (OH) 2. Because of their small thickness (0.2 to 0.3 µt) and their surface (25 to 30 µm), such microfilts are advantageously used in the production of films, sheets

synthetic, cellulosic materials (paper, etc.) etc. Such micro sheets act as a flame retardant.
