<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
Le cycle a été le suivant : a Purge de l'atmosphère du four sous N2 : 30 m3/h pendant 1 h ; Balayage sous N2 + 4 % Hn, 15 m3/h pendant la montée en température jusqu'à 6000C environ, durée 10 h ;

PROCESS FOR THE HEAT TREATMENT OF METAL OBJECTS UNDER PROTECTION ATMOSPHERE
The present invention relates to a process for the thermal treatment of metallic objects under a protective atmosphere in an oven operating discontinuously, for example a so-called "bell" oven.
The discontinuous heat treatment of metallic objects, in particular coils of sheet metal or wire, for example in a bell furnace, is mainly carried out under a nitrogen-based atmosphere with a little hydrogen (less than 10%) to avoid oxidation of the coils. This type of atmosphere can be produced by on-site gas generators or by mixed nitrogen and hydrogen industrial gases.
In recent years, we have witnessed in this field the substitution of these nitrogen-based atmospheres by atmospheres of pure hydrogen, or with a high hydrogen content, of the order of 75%.
This substitution is particularly advantageous because, since hydrogen has better thermal conductivity than nitrogen, the duration of the treatment cycle is reduced by approximately 20%. In addition, the quality of the heat treatment is improved, because the heating of metallic objects is more homogeneous (reduced temperature difference between the core and the periphery of the treated objects).
On the other hand, the cleanliness of the sheets is better (less carbon residue) as well as their shine. This represents a very important advantage for sheets having to undergo a subsequent surface treatment, such as galvanization.
The conversion of "bell" ovens operating under a nitrogen atmosphere with a low hydrogen content using hydrogen however requires major modifications with regard to sealing and safety, since hydrogen is a particularly flammable gas. These modifications are so important that it is often preferable for users to buy new ovens specially designed for this purpose. Whichever solution is chosen, the resulting investments are very significant, which represents a brake on the development of these atmospheres, which are very beneficial in themselves.
European patent 0.133. 613 describes a mixed treatment process, in which the entire heat treatment phase, including the rise in temperature, is ensured in an atmosphere of nitrogen with a low hydrogen content, while in the cooling phase, this atmosphere is modified by an additional injection. hydrogen or other gas with a lower specific gravity, so as to maintain the pressure which otherwise would tend to drop sharply below
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
atmospheric pressure - due to cooling - which would cause unwanted air entry, so that the initial low hydrogen content (of the order of 5%) then rises to a content relatively high (around 68%), the rest being nitrogen.
The proposal according to this European patent 0.133. 613 represents a certain improvement with regard to the duration of the treatment cycle which is reduced, since the cooling is thereby accelerated. However, the high hydrogen content during the cooling phase, much higher than the explosive limit, necessarily leads to the drawback mentioned above, which obliges the user, to be equipped with ovens suitable for the safe implementation of explosive hydrogen contents.
The present invention aims to provide a heat treatment of metallic objects in an oven operating discontinuously, which is significantly reduced in duration compared to conventional treatments under a nitrogen-based atmosphere, while ensuring the quality of treatment recognized in the atmosphere. hydrogen, but content with improvements of a completely minor character in conventional ovens using nitrogen-based atmospheres.
According to the invention, in a process of the kind where, in an initial phase of temperature rise, an injection of a flushing gas flow with a substantial nitrogen content is provided, while a final cooling phase is carried out under atmosphere with a predominant content of a gas other than nitrogen, the atmosphere with a content other than nitrogen is obtained by injecting a mixture based on helium with a low hydrogen content with evacuation of a corresponding gas flow outside from the oven.
Thanks to the heliun, good heat conduction is quickly ensured inside the metal parts being treated, and this without any explosive risk. To take account of the relatively high cost of helium, it is first necessary to adapt the furnace to this new use by reducing leakage to a minimum, that is to say by bringing an improvement in terms of the seals. sealing of conventional nitrogen treatment ovens.
The invention also provides for various measures, some of which allow helium losses to be reduced to a minimum:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
According to one of these measures, the injection of the helium mixture with a low hydrogen content is continued at least until the helium content is greater than 50%.
According to another measure, the gaseous mixture based on helium with a low hydrogen content comes from a pre-established mixture with helium and hydrogen from reserves, or from the gaseous charge recovered at the end of treatment and substantially purified in nitrogen.
According to yet another measure, the substitution of the atmosphere with a substantial nitrogen content for the atmosphere with a substantial helium content is carried out by injection of the gas with a substantial helium content and recycling of the atmosphere gas after passing through a separator. of nitrogen, for example of the pinna membrane type, said recycling of atmospheric gas ending as soon as the nitrogen content reaches a sufficiently low threshold, preferably less than 20%, after which the injection of gas with a substantial helium content is a simple injection to compensate for possible leaks and / or during cooling to maintain the internal pressure of the furnace.
The injection of the low hydrogen content helium mixture begins as soon as possible after thermal elimination of the oils associated with the treated objects but preferably before the temperature level is reached.
According to yet another of these measures, the cooling ends with a purging of the gaseous atmosphere with a substantial helium content by nitrogen sweeping with recovery of the gas with a substantial helium content by passing over a nitrogen separator, by example of the permeation membrane type, which is advantageously the one used to replace the atmosphere with a substantial nitrogen content with the atmosphere with a substantial helium content.
Thanks to the implementation of one and / or the other of these measures, and preferably of all of these measures, an limits the helium losses to a minimum. In particular, as the elimination of soaps and oils ends around 600OC, so that the pollution of the atmosphere decreases then strongly, it is advisable to switch at this time from the nitrogen-based atmosphere to l helium-based atmosphere. Thanks to the recycling of the nitrogen-based atmosphere progressively substituted in a heliun-based atmosphere on a nitrogen separator, the losses of helium during this substitution are
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
particularly reduced,
which represents a significant saving compared to a simple purge of the furnace by a gas with a high helium content. Likewise, the recovery at the end of treatment of atmospheric gas with a high helium content with storage in a buffer tank represents a significant limitation of the possible losses of helium.
An implementation of the invention will now be described with reference to the single figure. In the accompanying drawing, there is shown a diagram of the temperatures on the ordinate (degrees Celsius) as a function of time (hours) on the abscissa during the different processing phases a, b, c, d and e and by hatched blocks representative of the quantities gas injected. The treatment which was implemented concerned the annealing of "low carbon" steel coils, the load being 25 tonnes and the annealing temperature of 700 C.
The cycle was as follows: a Purge of the furnace atmosphere under N2: 30 m3 / h for 1 h; Sweeping under N2 + 4% Hn, 15 m3 / h during the temperature rise up to approximately 6000C, duration 10 h;

Flow rate 15 m3 / h, duration 2 h, which corresponds to a total treatment duration of 58 h, which

can take up the 55 h obtained under H and the 65 h under N2 + 5% 2 Gas consumption amounted to:

8 m3 of He
The reduced helium consumption comes from the low leakage through the bell oven seals (0.1 m3 / h) and the low helium losses during recirculation of the atmosphere through the separator membrane and during opening of the bell at the end of the treatment.
To be economically competitive with hydrogen processes, the proposal according to the invention requires, cane already mentioned, ovens with good quality seals. In this case, the operating costs are comparable, but the "heliun" solution does not lead to significant investments, since it can be applied without any safety problem on a conventional oven using a mixture of nitrogen with a low content. into hydrogen.
Furthermore, the productivity and quality gains compared to the nitrogen-based process are close to those obtained with hydrogen.
The device for recycling the atmosphere with a nitrogen separator can be used successively for several ovens operating with jet lag, which further limits the investments for implementing the process.
The process applies to all types of ovens operating batchwise. Ovens using sand or poor quality joints must be adapted by a minor transformation to limit heliun leaks. The other ovens can be used as is, since the atmosphere of a mixture of heliun and hydrogen with a content of less than 10% is not flammable.
