<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Asbestos-free friction lining Description
The novelty concerns an asbestos-free friction lining, in particular for railway brakes, and this for both disc brakes and shoe brakes.
For shoe brakes, e.g. brake shoes made of gray cast iron, because there is only a slight drop in the coefficient of friction in humidity.
Another advantage is that they do not contain asbestos. Their comparatively short lifespan and the untimely formation of sparks when the brakes are applied, however, constitute a drawback in comparison with friction linings with asbestos linked by a synthetic material. To avoid the formation of sparks, friction fittings in gray cast iron with a high phosphorus content have been proposed.
The friction linings with asbestos bonded by a synthetic material offer a low formation of sparks and a significantly higher longevity which, in this case, is multiplied by 12.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Because of the asbestos problem, new mixtures for friction linings have been formulated, the approximate composition of which is as follows:
5 to 35% by weight of binder,
10 to 60% by weight of mineral fillers,
5 to 40% by weight of lubricants,
10 to 65% by weight of metals and possibly hardening accelerators, friction reinforcers and similar additives.
Mineral fillers are, for example, barite and magnesium oxide in powder form. The metals can be incorporated both in the form of powders and in the form of fibers. Lubricants are mostly carbon powder like graphite, carbon black and coke.
All mixtures contain iron as a metal and this up to about 40% by weight. This proportion of iron causes, depending on the quantity, a formation of sparks more or less strong. Sparking can indeed be reduced by adding a lubricant, but cannot be eliminated. Usually about three parts by volume of graphite are added to one part by volume of iron to obtain optimal conditions.
Friction linings made from these mixtures are not suitable for many areas of application, such as for brakes on explosion-protected vehicles or on high-speed trains.
There therefore arose the problem of developing friction linings without asbestos bound by a synthetic material which have an even lower spark formation during braking.
The problem is solved, in accordance with the novelty, by a friction lining of the aforementioned type which contains, in addition to the usual fillers, 2 to 35% by weight, in particular 10 to 25% by weight of a mixture obtained. from alkaline phosphates and / or ammonium and anti-trisulfide
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
monk as a filler. The proportion of phosphate mixtures to antimony trisulfide ranges from 1: 3 to 9: 1.
As phosphate, a mixture of hydrated phosphate and anhydrous phosphate is preferably used with a proportion of hydrated phosphate mixture to anhydrous phosphate from 1: 3 to 6: 1.
Antimony trisulfide is known per se as a component of solid lubricants in friction linings. According to patents EP-A-0 198 420 and EP-A-0 328 514, solid lubricants of this type consist of graphite, zinc sulfide, antimony sulfide and calcium phosphates, iron, magnesium, aluminum or zinc.
Such solid lubricants improve the friction properties of the linings but do not prevent the formation of sparks.
The novelty will be explained in more detail using the following examples.
Examples 1 to 4
Mixtures for friction linings are prepared in the usual way from the formulations set out in the table, are pressed into shoe brake shoes according to UIC technical sheet No. 541 and tested on the test bench for brakes at one speed. 240 km / h and with a pressure force of 2500 daN. In this case, the formation of sparks is evaluated by assigning points from 1 to 10. A point means a very pronounced spark formation as in the case of a gray cast iron brake shoe.
At 10 points, absolutely no sparking occurs.
The results are also presented in the table. Thus, example 1 starts from a common friction lining (comparison). Examples 2 and 3 relate to friction linings conforming to the novelty and in Comparative Example 4, sodium phosphate (Example 2) was replaced by calcium phosphate.
As the examples show, sparking in friction linings can be effectively reduced by replacing some of the fillers
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
mineral by a mixture of sodium phosphate and antimony trisulfide, while the addition of a mixture of calcium phosphate and antimony trisulfide further accentuates the formation of sparks.
The use of hydrated sodium phosphate (example 2) leads in fact to softer linings and therefore to increased wear compared to standard linings (example 1).
The use of anhydrous sodium phosphate alone also results in less sparking, but the packing is too hard and has poorer friction properties than the standard packing.
For the formation of sparks, the hardness of the gasket is not, however, decisive. The hardness and therefore the wear and friction properties can be adjusted via the mixing ratio of hydrated phosphate to anhydrous phosphate. Other tests have shown that the hardness of the packing can be increased by an increased addition of antimony trisulfide but, in this case, the formation of sparks also increases.
