POLYMEERSAMENSTELLING
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Polymeer A bevat over het algemeen 2-50 gew. % acrylonitrilmonomeereenheden en 50-98 gew. % vinylaromatische monomeereenheden.
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
Bij voorkeur bevat polymeer B 3-35 gew. % spirodilactonmonomeereenheden en 5-45 gew. % dicarbonzuuranhydridemonomeereenheden.
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
Voorbeeld I

10 C/minuut.

POLYMER COMPOSITION
The invention relates to a polymer composition containing a polymer A containing vinyl aromatic monomer units and acrylonitrile monomer units and a polymer B containing vinyl aromatic monomer units.
Such a polymer composition is known from DE-A-3. 332.326.
The known polymer composition has good processability and high rigidity. Although the polymer composition has relatively good dimensional stability at elevated temperature, for many applications, the dimensional stability at elevated temperature is still insufficient.
The object of the invention is to provide a polymer composition which does not have the above-mentioned drawback.
This is achieved in that in the polymer composition according to the invention polymer B at least 1 wt. % spirodilactone monomer units.
Due to the thus improved dimensional stability at elevated temperature, the polymer composition according to the invention can be used in articles which are exposed to higher temperatures. For example, it is possible to use the polymer composition according to the invention in automotive parts that are mounted on or directly in the vicinity of the engine, while this is not quite possible with the known polymer composition.
A further advantage of the polymer composition according to the invention is the greatly improved thermal stability compared to the known polymer composition. This allows the polymer composition to work at even higher temperatures, and consequently with lower ones
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
viscosity, are processed into articles with a more complex design. The polymer composition can also be used in articles which have also been exposed to elevated temperature for long periods.
Polymer A generally contains 2-50 wt. % acrylonitrile monomer units and 50-98 wt. % vinyl aromatic monomer units. Suitable vinyl aromatic monomers are, for example, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, para-methyl styrene or a mixture thereof. Styrene is preferably used. Furthermore, polymer A may contain minor amounts of one or more other monomer units such as methyl methacrylate monomer units.
Preferably, polymer A has a weight average molecular weight between 30,000 and 150,000 kg / kmol.
Polymer B is known per se from WO-90/06956.
Polymer B can be prepared by preparing a polymer C containing dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units and vinyl aromatic monomer units in a first step by any of the known methods and converting polymer C to polymer B in a second step.
Suitable vinyl aromatic monomers are, for example, styrene, alpha-methylstyrene, para-methylstyrene and mixtures thereof. Styrene is preferably used.
EMI2.1
Suitable dicarboxylic anhydrides are, for example, maleic anhydride, chloral maleic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, cyclohexylmaleic anhydride, benzylmaleic anhydride, phenylmaleic anhydride, aconitic anhydride, propylmaleic anhydride and mixtures thereof. Maleic anhydride (MZA) is preferably used.
The conversion of polymer B to polymer C can take place by heating to a temperature of preferably 200-300 C.
During the heating, a reaction takes place in the chain of the pclymer, in which dicarboxylic anhydride-viyl-aromatic monomer-dicarboxylic anhydride (Form. 1) reacts to spirodilactone (Form. II) according to the reaction equation:
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
EMI3.1
The polymer should be heated for a sufficiently long time for the desired conversion to take place. However, there is a danger that, over time, before the desired conversion is achieved, secondary thermal degradation processes in the polymer will play a significant role. Partly for this reason, the heating is preferably carried out in the presence of a basic catalyst.
By using the catalyst, the desired conversion can be achieved more quickly and at a lower temperature.
Examples of suitable catalysts are tertiary amines, preferably use is made of triethylamine (TEA) or 1,4-diazabicyclo [2,2,2] utane (DABCO).
The reaction can be carried out by heating the polymer as such, the reaction taking place while the polymer is in the molten state.
It is also possible to carry out the reaction while the polymer is in solution. Suitable solvents are, for example, dimethylformamide, tetrahydrofuran, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone or other ketones.
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The elevated temperature dimensional stability of the polymer composition increases the higher the content of spirodilactone monomer units in polymer B is. Therefore, polymer B preferably contains at least 2 wt. % spirodilactone monomer units. In a further preferred embodiment, polymer B contains at least 4 wt. % spirodilactone monomer units. In a still further preferred embodiment, polymer B contains at least 6 wt. % spirodilactone monomer units.
Preferably, polymer B has a weight average molecular weight between 30,000 and 200,000 kg / kmol.
Preferably, polymer B contains dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units.
EMI4.1
Suitable dicarboxylic anhydrides are, for example, maleic anhydride, chloral maleic anhydride, citraconic anhydride, cyclohexylmaleic anhydride, benzylmaleic anhydride, phenylmaleic anhydride, aconitic anhydride, propylmaleic anhydride and mixtures thereof. Maleic anhydride (MZA) is preferably used.
If polymer B, as described above, is prepared from polymer C, depending inter alia on the content of dicarboxylic anhydride and vinyl aromatic monomer units in polymer C and its distribution over the chain of this polymer, after conversion to the spirodilactone the polymer B thus obtained still contain a certain amount of the dicarboxylic acid hydride monomer units.
It is also possible to only partially carry out the conversion to the spirodilactone, whereby an even higher content of dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units is present in the polymer B.
In this way a polymer B is obtained which is even more miscible with the polymer A, which further improves the properties of the polymer composition according to the invention, such as the dimensional stability at elevated temperature.
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Preferably polymer B contains 3-35 wt. % spirodilactone monomer units and 5-45 wt. % dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units.
Even better miscibility is obtained if the ratio between the content of acrylonitrile monomer units in polymer A and the content of dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units in polymer B is between 0.3 and 2.2. Preferably, the ratio between the content of acrylonitrile monomer units in polymer A and the content of dicarboxylic anhydride monomer units in polymer B is between 0.7 and 1.6. In this way, a polymer composition according to the invention is obtained, in which polymer A and polymer B are in any mixing ratio are completely molecular miscible. This can be deduced, inter alia, from the fact that the polymer composition exhibits a single, sharp glass transition temperature.
Furthermore, if the polymer composition contains no further additives, such as fillers, in addition to polymer A and polymer B, the polymer composition is completely transparent.
In a further embodiment, the polymer B of the polymer composition of the invention may contain imide monomer units.
N-phenyl-maleimide, malimide, citraconimide, itaconimide, aconimide, N-methylmaleimide or mixtures thereof can be used in polymer B as imide.
A polymer composition according to the invention with good impact strength is obtained if the polymer composition contains a rubber as an impact strength improver.
Generally, a rubber with a glass transition temperature of less than -100C is used for this. Examples of suitable rubbers are polybutadiene, EPDM, hydroxylated EPDM, polybutyl acrylate and silicone rubber.
Preferably, the rubber is grafted with a polymer miscible with the polymer composition. For example, it is possible for the rubber to be grafted with polymer A or polymer B. Preferably, polybutadiene rubber grafted with styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN) is used.
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
The polymer composition according to the invention can contain the usual additives such as stabilizers, processing aids, fillers and fibers, such as glass fibers.
The polymer composition is very suitable for use in the manufacture of, for example, automotive parts such as dashboards, valve covers, distributor caps, housing for electronic and electrical equipment, switches, connectors, etc. d.
The invention is further elucidated by means of the following examples without being limited thereto.
Example I
Different polymer B samples were prepared by styrene-maleic anhydride copolymers (polymer C) with a maleic anhydride monomer units (MZA) content of 28.32 and 36 wt. % and a weight average molecular weight of 110,000 kg / kmol to be extruded through a co-rotating W&P (R) twin screw extruder of the type ZSK 30 supplied by Werner and Pfleiderer from Germany.
The throughput was 6 kg / hour. The melting temperature was 250 C.
TEA was continuously injected into the extruder and mixed with the molten polymer.
By varying the content of TEA thus added to the polymer, samples 1-15 of the polymer B were obtained with a varying content of spirodilactone monomer units.
The MZA content in the samples and in the starting polymers C was determined using a Perkin Eimer (R) IR device, type 1760 FT-IR. From this, the content of spirodilactone monomer units in the samples was calculated from the reaction equation given in the text of this application and assuming that no side reactions occurred.
The glass transition temperature (Tg) was determined using a Perkin Eimer (R) DSC device, type DSC 7. The sample size was 10-15 mg. The heating rate was
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
10 C / minute.
The results are shown in Table 1.

The MZA levels in the polymer B samples of the mixtures from Table 3, Table 4 and Table 5, respectively, are comparable.
Table 3-5 shows that the glass transition temperature of the blends increases significantly with the content of spirodilactone monomer units in polymer B.
Example II
The miscibility of polymer A and polymer B was determined by measuring the glass transition temperatures of the blends using DSC. Polymers A and B are completely miscible if the mixture has a glass transition temperature.
The polymers A and B are partially miscible if the mixture has two glass transition temperatures which have shifted to a higher and a lower value, respectively, relative to the glass transition temperatures of the polymers A and B used.

Polymers A and B are partially miscible in the blends SAN 13, 8/2, SAN 29/2, SAN 33/2 and SAN 13, 8/10, and completely miscible in the other blends.
It appears that with increasing MZA content in polymer B (sample 2, 17.6 wt.% MZAi sample 10, 21, 7 wt.% MZA), its miscibility with SAN increases. example III
The polymer B samples 1-15 were mixed with ABS, type Ronfalin (R) TZ 220 from DSM, as indicated in example 1.
The mixing ratio was 60 wt. % ABS and 40 wt. % polymer B. The mixtures were processed into flat plates with a thickness of 3 mm and a length and a width of 65 mm using an Arburg (R), type Allround 220-90-350 injection molding machine. The melting temperature of the mixture in the injection molding machine was 310 ° C, the residence time of the mixture at this temperature was 5 min.
<Desc / Clms Page number 11>
The surface quality - the number of silver streaks per unit area - of the flat plates was a measure of the thermal stability (TS) of the mixtures. The plates were compared to standard plates and thus rated from 0-10: 0 = very many surface defects, poor thermal stability; 10 = no surface defects, very good thermal stability.
The results are shown in Table 8.
