<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
PVC.

New compositions for floor covering support layers
The subject of the present invention is the use of quaternized 2-alkylimidazolines as anti-static agents for the support layers of floor coverings, especially for carpets and PVC floor coverings.
Walking on carpets or other floor coverings causes static charges which accumulate and discharge if they are grounded. This can cause severe physical shock and can even damage electrical installations.
The surface of use of carpets or other floor coverings can often be made conductive by the incorporation of anti-static fibers capable of dissipating the charges. a problem which remains is that of the conductivity of the materials constituting the support layer of floor coverings, that is to say of the lower layer of the covering in contact with the ground. These are usually PVC plastisol, bitumen, propylene or petroleum resins (such as aromatic hydrocarbon resins) which are applied as a liquid or hot melt on the underside of the surface. use, for example on the back of the primary layer of a carpet comprising the surface of use, that is to say the bristles.
The methods of preparing carpets using these materials are well known and described, for example, in US patents 4,702,950.4,582,554 and 4,737,221, the content of which is incorporated into the present application by way of reference.
Such materials provide floor coverings with good dimensional stability and good hold flat. They also allow floor coverings to be carried out continuously.
However, many of them, especially those based on or containing bitumen, are by nature
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
insulators and cancel any gain in conductivity obtained for example by incorporating anti-static fibers in the surface of use.
The Applicant has now found that this disadvantage can be reduced, or even sometimes completely eliminated, by incorporating certain chemical compounds into the materials constituting the support layer of floor coverings.
The invention therefore relates to an anti-static composition intended to constitute the support layer of a floor covering, characterized in that it comprises a material chosen from bitumens and petroleum resins applicable in the form of hot melt, and mixtures thereof, material in which one or more compounds of formula I is incorporated
EMI2.1
in which Ri signifies a C7-C21 alkyl or alkenyl group in Cy-Czi, R2 signifies OH, -O-COR, -NH2 or -NHCOR where R has the meaning of Ri, independently of Ri,
EMI2.2
R3 signifies an unsubstituted C1-C4 alkyl group or
EMI2.3
monosubstituted by OH-CH-CgHg or-CH-CH-CH, \ 0 /
EMI2.4
R4 signifies an anion, preferably Cl, Br, or the methyl-sulfate group (MeS04)
or ethyl sulfate (EtSO4) and n means 1 or 2.
Preferably, n signifies 2 and R4 is chosen from Cl, Br and the methyl-sulphate group (MeSO4).
The compound of formula I is incorporated into
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
the material of the support layer, in an amount of 1 to 10% by weight relative to the weight of the material of the support layer.
The preferred compounds of formula I are those in which: R2 signifies a hydroxy group, n signifies 2, R 1 signifies a C1-C2l alkyl group or a C, 5-C2 alkenyl group, preferably a Cn-Cn alkyl group or Cis-Czi alkenyl and R3 is methyl or 2-hydroxypropyl.
The material of the support layer is chosen from bitumens and petroleum resins applicable in the form of a hot melt, suitable for the manufacture of floor coverings. When an applicable petroleum resin is used in the form of a hot melt, it is preferably an aromatic hydrocarbon resin. The material of the support layer is preferably a bitumen. The preferred bitumens are those having a softening point (measured according to the ball and ring method, ASTM D36) of between 95 and 1150 and a penetration index (measured according to the ASTM D5 method) of 15 mm.
The material of the support layer may also contain other materials, for example a filler, the most usual being limestone, which is added in an amount not exceeding 50% by weight relative to the material of the support layer. .
One or more compounds of formula I can be incorporated into the material of the support layer to give a composition of the invention which is then applied to the floor covering, according to the usual methods. The floor coverings which are particularly suitable for the compositions of the invention are carpets, in particular non-woven carpets such as tiles, and floor coverings made of
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
PVC. Floor coverings which comprise a composition of the invention not only have the usual desired properties such as dimensional stability, good flatness and ease of preparation, but also a considerably reduced (and often completely non-existent) tendency to generate static charges.
The invention therefore relates to a floor covering which comprises at least one layer obtained from a composition according to the invention.
The invention also relates to a process for the preparation of a floor covering, a process according to which the underside of the primary layer of a floor covering is covered with at least one layer of a composition according to the invention.
The following examples illustrate the invention without in any way limiting its scope. In these examples, the bitumen used has the following characteristics: Softening point (ASTM D36) - 115 +/- Soc Penetration index (ASTM D5) - 15 to 25 mm
The method used in the examples for determining the strength is as follows.
The device used is a portable device for determining the resistance (Megger "Megohmeter" MM29). It is connected to two electrodes. The electrode which is placed in position adjacent to the support layer is a solid brass plate 20 x 20 cm and 1 cm thick. The electrode which rests on the surface of use (when there is one) is a solid steel cylinder of 2.2 kg and 31.7 cm2. The area of the sample to be tested corresponds at least to that of the brass electrode.
Before the test, the samples are kept overnight at 20 2 and at 5% relative humidity.
