Abstract

Process for the simultaneous preparation of N-phosphonomethylimino-diacetic acid and lower acid chloride by using imino-diacetic acid and phosphorus trichloride, process which consists in reacting the phosphorus tichloride and the carboxylic acid in C1-C4 in a molar ratio of about 1/3 at a temperature between 0 and 20 degrees C, separating the phosphoric acid phase formed from the carboxylic acid chloride phase and isolating the carboxylic acid chloride, then after dilution in water, reacting the phosphorous acid phase also containing the carboxylic acid and the carboxylic acid chloride with the imino-diacetic acid and the aqueous formaldehyde solution, the imino-diacetic acid / molar ratio phosphorous acid / formaldehyde being of the order of 1/1 to 1.1 / 1 to 1.2, in the presence of a strong mineral acid, preferably hydrochloric acid, which is added at a temperature included between 60 and 120 degrees C, then evaporate the mixture until the crystals separate.
