<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>
<Desc/Clms Page number 5>
<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>
<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>
EMI9.1

"Electric kettle".
The invention relates to an electric kettle, comprising a body which in turn comprises a bottom and a cap mounted on this bottom, the kettle further comprising an electric heating element connected to a supply circuit, a spout opening into the body. and a whistle mounted in the upper part of the body.
An electric kettle of this kind is known from GB-A-598032. The cap of this kettle is provided with a filling opening closed by a cover and a whistle can be mounted in this cover. Although the action of this whistle is not described, it is obvious that it produced an alarm signal as soon as the water temperature exceeds a certain value.
However, the signal is only stopped by emptying the kettle when it is operating in automatic emptying mode or by stopping the current supply to the heating element in the other case.
In the first case, the automatic emptying is done when the pressure in the space above the water level in the body exceeds a certain fairly high value which requires a fairly solid construction of the body and the mechanical locking of the cover on the cap.
As soon as enough water has left the kettle, a switch sensitive to the amount of water in the kettle cuts off the supply circuit.
In the second case, the whistle alarm signal is only interrupted by manually cutting the heating element supply circuit or when the aforementioned switch cuts this circuit as soon as by evaporation the quantity of water in the kettle drops below a certain amount.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The switch also cuts the circuit when the kettle is raised.
The construction and, especially because of the necessary blocking of the lid, the use of this kettle are quite complicated.
GB-A-442957 also describes an electric kettle comprising a whistle, but this kettle does not include any means for automatically cutting off the supply circuit of the heating element. The whistle signal when boiling water is interrupted only by manually cutting the supply circuit.
In addition the whistle is in fact not mounted on the cap but on a bell mounted on the bottom inside the cap.
Another electric kettle giving an alarm signal when boiling water is described in GB-A-473 640.
The signal is not, however, generated by a simple whistle but by a multi-tone Harmonic System which already gives a signal at relatively low pressures in space above the water level.
The signal is only interrupted by manually cutting off the heating element supply circuit.
The object of the invention is to remedy these drawbacks and to provide a kettle of the kind in question, of simple construction giving an alarm signal warning that the water will reach its desired temperature, this signal automatically stopping after some time.
For this purpose, the kettle includes a thermal switch controlling the supply circuit to the heating element and cutting off this circuit when the temperature of the liquid reaches a value slightly higher than the temperature of the liquid at which the speed of the vapor produced. leaving the space above the liquid level through the whistle is such that this whistle gives an alarm signal.
The alarm signal is therefore given before the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
desired temperature of the liquid is reached. When this temperature is reached, the switch automatically cuts off the current supply to the heating element. As a result, the production of steam decreases and the speed of the vapor leaving the space above the level of the liquid through the whistle falls below the level at which the whistle generates a signal. The user is therefore warned just before the liquid will reach its desired temperature. It can therefore react and stop the kettle even before the liquid boils, but it is not obliged to react.
On the one hand the heating is automatically stopped when this temperature is reached and on the other hand, by this stop, the alarm signal which could generate when it lasts too long, also stops after a fairly short period of time without usage intervention.
Electric kettles in which the heating element supply circuit is cut off automatically when the liquid boils are known per se from GB-A-431525 and FR-A-2188985 but these kettles do not give an alarm signal before the water is boiling.
The kettle according to GB-A-431 525 does not include a whistle or other means giving an alarm signal.
The kettle according to FR-A-2 188 985 does not include a whistle actuated by the steam produced but an electric vibrator which is actuated after the water has boiled and therefore after the member cutting the supply circuit of the heating element has cut this circuit.
Although it is not indicated how to stop this signal, it seems obvious that this can only be done manually by cutting the power supply to the vibrator.
In a particular embodiment of the invention, the body and the whistle are arranged in such a way that with the heating element in operation, the temperature of the liquid at which the vapor leaving the space above the level of the liquid through the whistle generates the alarm signal is reached between 10 to 20 seconds before the thermal switch
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
interrupts the heating element supply circuit.
In another embodiment of the invention, the body and the whistle are arranged such that the temperature of the liquid at which the speed of the vapor leaving the space above the level of the liquid through the whistle is sufficient to generate the alarm signal is located between 900C and 99 C.
Preferably, the thermal switch is arranged in such a way that it cuts off the supply circuit of the heating element at a temperature between
EMI4.1
990C and ICOC.
The kettle according to the invention may advantageously comprise a second safety switch controlling the supply circuit of the heating element and cutting this circuit when the level of the liquid in the body drops below a certain value.
In one embodiment of the invention preferably applied, the spout opens into the body through an opening in the wall of the cap and is located completely outside the body.
In this embodiment, the electric heating element can easily be mounted inside the body, above the bottom. Cleaning the interior is very easy.
This cleaning is further facilitated when the interior of the body is free from any wall opposite the opening through which the spout opens into the body.
Cleaning is also easier when the cap is provided at the top with a filling opening, the body comprising a cover which can close this opening.
The cover can be mounted freely with normal play in the filling opening, the weight of the cover being such that it remains in place at the relatively low vapor pressure which is necessary for the whistle to sound the alarm signal.
Other features and advantages of the invention
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Will emerge from the description given below of an electric kettle according to the invention: this description is given only by way of nonlimiting example and with
EMI5.1
reference to the accompanying drawing.
The figure shows a schematic section of an electric kettle according to the invention.
The electric kettle according to the figure comprises a body consisting of a bottom 1, a cap 2 whose upper part is provided with a filling opening 3 and a cover 4 closing this opening.
EMI5.2
The cover 4, which usually carries a button 5, rests freely with normal play in the opening 3.
A handle spanning the opening 3 and the cover 4 and extending with a part along the side wall of the cap 2 is fixed to this cap.
The bottom 1 rests on four small feet 7.
In the body 1, 2, 4, a heating element formed by an electrical resistance 8 is mounted which extends horizontally just above the bottom 1 and which is connected to a current supply circuit 15 which is mounted in cavities or channels formed in the handle 6.
The kettle also includes a pouring spout 9 which is connected to the interior of the body 1, 2, 4 by an opening 10 which has been cut, near the bottom 1, in the cap 2.
A whistle 11 is mounted in the cover 4. This whistle 11 comprises a small bowl 12 which is welded to the lower part of the cover. This small bowl is provided with an opening 13 which is located opposite an opening 14 in the upper wall of the cover. This opening 14 is surrounded by the small bowl 12.
By adjusting the distance between the bottom of the small bowl 12 and the upper wall of the cover 4, as well as the diameters of the openings 14 and 13, it is possible to adjust the tone of the whistle signal and to modify the vapor speed somewhat necessary to obtain
<Desc / Clms Page number 6>
a signal.
The body 1, 2, 4 and the whistle 11 are arranged in such a way that the vapor speed required for the whistle 11 to give an alarm signal is reached at a water temperature between 900C and 99OC.
The openings 13 and 14 can have a diameter of 7 mm and 7 mm respectively, while the distance between the bottom of the bowl 12 and the cover 4 is 6 mm.
The supply circuit 15 comprises two wires connecting the two ends of the heating resistor 8 to two pins 26 mounted in a socket 27 extending beyond the handle and used for the insertion of an electrical plug mounted on a supply cable. electric.
In one of the wires of the circuit 15, two switches 16 and 17 are connected in series.
One of the switches is a thermal switch 16 which normally closes the circuit 15.
This thermal switch 16 is mounted in a cavity 18 in the handle, a cavity which is connected to a small chamber 20 formed above inside the body 1, 2, 4 by an opening 21 in the upper part of the cap 2 and is connected by a slot 22 provided in the handle and opening laterally into the open air.
The chamber 20 is delimited by a wall 23 welded inside the cap 2 and provided in its lower part with an inlet opening 24. This chamber 20 is normally located in the space 19 located in the body 1, 2, 4 above water level 25.
The switch 16 comprises a temperature-sensitive element, for example a bimetal. Part of the steam produced enters through the opening 24 in the chamber 20, passes through the opening 21, on the thermal switch 16 and leaves the cavity 18 through the slot 22.
This switch is set so that it
<Desc / Clms Page number 7>
cut circuit 15 as soon as the temperature of the steam passing over it and therefore the temperature of the water in the kettle reaches the desired temperature, that is to say a temperature between 990C and IOOOC.
Since, as already mentioned, the whistle already gives an alarm signal when the water temperature reaches 90 to 99 ° C., this signal is therefore given before the supply circuit 15 is cut. Switch 16 is set so that circuit 15 is cut approximately 10 to 20 seconds after the start of the alarm signal.
The other switch 17 is a safety switch which is mounted in the cap 2 just above the heating element 8. This switch 17 normally closes the circuit 15 but opens it when the water level 25 is below from him. Such switches are known per se and this switch is therefore not described in detail here. This switch prevents the kettle from operating if the heating element is not submerged.
The opening 10 through which the spout 9 opens into the body 1, 2, 4 must be located as low as possible and in any case completely below the above-mentioned level below which the safety switch 17 cuts the circuit of feed 15. The top of this opening 10 is therefore less than 5 cm and preferably less than 3 cm above the bottom 1 of the kettle.
As the opening 10 is located fairly close to the bottom 1, this opening is already closed by a small amount of liquid in the kettle.
If the kettle can operate, the opening 10 is necessarily closed by the liquid.
The opening 10 is preferably 10 to 15% larger than the opening at the upper part of the pouring spout 9. It is obvious that the latter must be located above or at the maximum level of the liquid in the kettle.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In the body 1, 2, 4 of the kettle no partition wall is located opposite the opening 10 so that the interior remains completely free to place an electrical resistance therein. By removing the cover 4, the interior is easily accessible for cleaning.
The kettle works as follows: When the kettle is connected to a power source, the supply circuit 15 not being cut, steam is formed in the space 11 above the level of the liquid, this is so at the top of the body 1, 2, 4. In this space, we create a vapor pressure. The steam is evacuated through the openings 13 and 14 of the whistle 11 and a part is evacuated through the chamber 20 and the cavity 18.
At a certain moment the speed of evacuation of this vapor through the whistle is sufficient to obtain a whistle signal. This is therefore achieved shortly before the liquid in the kettle reaches the boiling point, i.e. when the water reaches a
EMI8.1
90 th temperature between 90 and 99OC.
There is no danger of the lid flying away, even if the openings of the whistle 11 are blocked.
The scaling of these two openings is very improbable as the inside of the lid is only touched by steam, therefore distilled water. Consequently, there is no scale formation. There is always the opening 10 of the spout through which steam or pressurized water can exit.
The electrical resistance 8 must obviously be powerful enough to compensate for the losses of vapor through the whistle 11, the chamber 20 and around the cover 4.
About 10 to 20 seconds after the whistle has started to whistle, the thermal switch 16 cuts off the supply circuit 15. Since the heating stops, the production of steam decreases and stops and the speed of the steam passing through the whistle is insuff-
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
EMI9.1
so that this whistle gives a signal and the signal therefore stops.
The switch 16 is such that once it has cut the circuit 15, it does not automatically close this circuit when the water temperature drops below the desired temperature. Manual intervention is necessary to restart the kettle.
The kettle is of simple construction and
EMI9.2
is reliable, safe and easy to clean. The use is very easy, especially since the user is warned before the liquid reaches the desired temperature, and both the heating and the audible signal stop automatically.
The invention is in no way limited to the embodiment described above and many modifications can be made thereto without departing from the scope of the patent application inter alia as to the form, the composition, the arrangement and the number of elements involved in its realization.
