<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

la tôle mobile et la mâchoire mobile de la pince étant synchronisés avec les moyens d'entraînement du couteau mobile et agences de manière à ce que, au cours d'un cycle du couteau mobile, c'est- à-dire entre chaque passage du couteau mobile en regard du couteau fixe, le support mobile soit entraîné pour effectuer un mouvement de va-et- vient entre deux positions extrêmes, une première position dans laquelle il est éloigné du couteau fixe et une seconde position dans laquelle il est proche du couteau fixe, la distance séparant ces deux positions extrêmes étant égale à la longueur des tronçons de fibres à couper ;

<Desc/Clms Page number 8>
<Desc/Clms Page number 9>

"Process for entraining fibers in a fiber cutter and cutter for implementing this process".
The present invention relates to a method for entraining fibers in the direction of the fixed and mobile knives of a fiber cutter, in particular a flock cutter.
In all known cutters, the fibers are entrained in the direction of the knives by pinching between smooth cylinders driven in rotation about axes extending transversely to the direction of movement of the fibers, the latter being immobilized temporarily, always by pinching and in upstream of the knives, when cutting.
This way of doing things presents the disadvantage of not ensuring regular drive of the fibers because, on the one hand, they are only pinched by the cylinders in the vicinity of their generatrices which face each other and that a slippage of the fibers relative to the smooth cylinders is inevitable, and, on the other hand, that
EMI1.1
the mattress or ribbon formed by the fibers to be entrained is free along its lateral edges. If these irregularities in the entrainment of fibers is of relative importance in fiber cutters cutting the latter into sections of considerable length, they become unacceptable in floc cutters, where the length of the sections of cut fibers is almost always less. to mm.
The object of the invention is to remedy this drawback and to provide a process which allows, which is particularly advantageous for floc cutters, an extremely precise entrainment of the fibers without any slippage of these fibers. relative to each other, over the entire section of the ribbon or fiber mat, so that the cut sections have the same length which remains constant during cutting.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
To this end, according to the invention, this method consists in preparing a fiber mat which is aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the vertical plane passing through the edge of the fixed knife so that this mattress is in the form of a ribbon, to ensure the step-by-step transport of the ribbon to the knives by supporting said ribbon in the vicinity of the fixed knife, so that its lower face and its lateral faces are each supported by a flat surface whose dimension, taken parallel to the above direction, is important compared to the length of the sections of fibers to be cut, which is at least of the order of 0, 1 mIm, -I do transport step by step and Ja cutting being carried out,
by temporarily immobilizing the ribbon with respect to the aforementioned surfaces and by causing an alternating movement of said surfaces supporting the ribbon in the above-mentioned direction and the amplitude of which is equal to a pitch which corresponds to the length of the sections of fibers to be cut, d after the next cycle and considering the movable knife away from the ribbon and the surfaces supporting the latter in their position furthest from the fixed knife:
temporary immobilization of the ribbon on the surfaces, fixed relative to each other, which support it at least during the entire movement of these surfaces towards the fixed knife to bring downstream of the latter a portion of ribbon whose length is equal to the length of the sections of fibers to be cut, temporary immobilization of the ribbon in an area located between the path of the movable knife and the aforementioned surfaces when the latter have reached their position closest to the stationary knife, cutting of the ribbon by the knife movable, release of the tape relative to the surfaces which support it, displacement of these surfaces to move them away from the fixed knife to their position furthest from the fixed knife,
immobilization of the ribbon on the surfaces and release of the ribbon in the sedites zone The immobilizations and releases of the ribbon being adjusted so that the latter is constantly immobilized either relative to the surfaces when it is free in the zone, or in this zone when it is free by in relation to surfaces.
According to an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the movement of the surfaces is controlled, in synchronism with the movable knife and from the drive thereof.

The process according to the invention is intended for the entrainment of fibers in the direction of the fixed and mobile knives I of a fiber cutter, in particular a floc cutter, and it consists first of all in preparing a fiber mattress 3 which is aligned in a direction substantially perpendicular to the vertical plane, of trace 4, passing through the edge 5 of the fixed knife I so that this mattress is in the form of a ribbon 6 .
The ribbon is transported to the knives step by step by supporting said ribbon, in the vicinity of the fixed knife l, so that its lower face 7 and its lateral faces 8 are each supported by a flat surface 9 whose dimension, taken in parallel in the above direction, is important with respect to the length of the sections 10 of fibers to be cut, which is at least of the order of 0.1 mm.
Said step-by-step transport and the cutting are carried out, by temporarily immobilizing the ribbon 6 relative to the surfaces 9 to prevent any sliding of the fibers 3 of the ribbon on each other during transport and by causing an alternating movement of the surfaces 9 supporting the ribbon in the above-mentioned direction and the amplitude of which is equal to a pitch which corresponds to the length of the sections 10 of fibers to be cut, according to the cycle defined below and considering, as the starting phase, the movable knife 2 away from ribbon 6 and the

read in relation to surfaces 9.
According to the invention, the ribbon 6 is immobilized with respect to the surfaces 9 by exerting a pressure regularly distributed over the upper surface 29 of the said ribbon, while the immobilization of the ribbon in the above-mentioned zone 12 is carried out by pinching the latter. by resting on the lower 7 and upper 29 faces of said strip, the method according to the invention providing for the adjustment of the amplitude of the reciprocating movement of the aforesaid surfaces 9 as a function of the length of the fibers to be cut as well as the adjustment on the one hand, the immobilization of said ribbon 6 relative to the surfaces 9 and, on the other hand, the immobilization of the ribbon 6 in the zone 12 as a function of the thickness of this ribbon, thickness which is kept substantially constant .
The ribbon 6 is prepared so that its width corresponds substantially to the distance which separates the above-mentioned surfaces 9 intended to support its lateral faces 8. To optimize the performance of the cutter, the above-mentioned distance separating these surfaces 9 is chosen to be slightly less than the length knives 1 and 2. The reciprocating movement of surfaces 9 advancing

step by step the ribbon 6 in the cutter, the temporary immobilization of the ribbon 6 relative to said surfaces 9 as well as the temporary immobilization of the ribbon 6 in the zone 12 are controlled from the drive of the movable knife 2, in synchronism with the latter.
Given the high rates of cutters, significant heating occurs at the level of knives 1 and 2 and this heating may be sufficient to agglomerate, or even weld certain synthetic fibers. To avoid this drawback, the process ¯ ¯ according to the invention provides for permanent cooling of the supports 13 and 14 of the expensive fixed 1 and mobile 2 supports which are chosen so that they have large contact surfaces with said knives.

These means 26, 27 and 28 are further arranged so that, during a cycle of the movable knife 2, that is to say between each passage of said movable knife opposite the fixed knife 1, the support mobile 16 is driven to move back and forth between two extreme positions, a second position in which it is close to the fixed knife 1 and
<Desc / Clms Page number 9>
in which it could, in the case of a low-speed cutter,
be kept stationary during the cutting of the ribbon 6 and a first position in which it is distant from the stationary knife 1, the distance separating these two extreme positions being equal to the length of the sections 10 of fibers to be cut. These means 26, 27 and 28 are further arranged so that, on the one hand, the movable plate 17 accompanies the movable support 16 in its movement when it passes from its first position to its second extreme position while being resting on the upper face 29 of the ribbon 6 and, on the other hand, accompanies the mobile support when it passes from its second position to its first extreme position while being moved away from the upper face
