Abstract

The invention relates to a method for enclosing an electric arc (22) burning in an electric arc furnace (10) by means of foamed slag (S), formed by introducing carbon substrate into the slag in the upper half of the steel bath (M). The noise emissions generated are detected and used to control the formation of foamed slag. The amplitude spectrum of the sound in the form of crackling (explosive sound emissions) is determined. The amplitudes connected with the crackling are evaluated, brought to a similar level and fed to a processor (43). The evaluated measured values are applied in the processor (43) to controlling the foamed slag (S), whereby any deviation above or below a preset value is used to influence the feed amount (32, 33) of carbon substrate for foaming the slag. The invention further relates to a correspondingly suitable device.
