4i
THIS INVENTION relates to a method of and apparatus
for treatment of soil foundations against infestation by
termites, fungus and the like.
Many areas are susceptible to infestation of the
soil by termites, fungus rots and other pests. In such an
area, it is customary, ci obligatoryp that before a building
is constructed, the soil layers under foundation work are
treated, by spraying with appropriate chemicals with the
object of preventing infestation by termites, fungus or the
10 like.
The protection given by such spraying is not,
i. however, indefinite, and indeed the average period of
protection in such a case may be only about ten years.
In many cases, then, it becomes necessary subsequently to
15 take further steps to control infestations. This has
hitherto been done by drilling holes in the concrete or other
foundations, and to inject pesticides under pressure through
these holes and into the affected soil. This method has
not proved satisfactory, as it is very costly, involving a considerable amount of time and labour, and moreover is
frequently far from effective, as efficient permeation of
all of the sub-foundation soil by chemicals introduced in
this manner is seldom achieved.
The present invention has been devised with the
general object of providing a method and means whereby the
treatment of soil under foundations of buildings may be carried out quickly, easily and economically whenever necessary or desirable.
Accordingly, the invention resides broadly in
a method of treating soil under building foundations against
infestation by termites, fungus and the like including the step of injecting, under pressure, a fluid pesticidal
substance through conduits located below the foundations, and from outlets from the conduits into the surrounding S: soil. In another aspect, the invention resides broadly
10 in apparatus for treating soil under building foundations •f including an assembly of interconnected conduits laid in soil below the foundations, an inlet to the said assembly
for the introduction of pesticidal treating substance
under pressure, and a multiplicity of outlets from the
*0 15 conduits to the ambient soil. In yet another aspect, the invention resides broadly in a foundation for a building including a porous bed of granular or like material, a 0*
concrete or like slab supported by the said bed, an assembly
of interconnected conduits within the bed, an inlet to the
20 assembly of conduits for the introduction under pressure
of a fluid pesticidal substance, and a multiplicity of
outlets from the assembly of conduits. Other features of the invention will become apparent from the following
description.
In order that a preferred embodiment of the invention may be readily understood and carried into practical effect, reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, wherein:-
FIG. 1 is a floor plan of a house, showing in
broken outline the layout of a system of interconnected
conduits in the foundation, and
FIG. 2 is a sectional drawing to increased scale
taken along line 2-2 in Fig. 1. *0
In the embodiment of the invention illustrated,
excavations are made in the soil for the reinforced
o. 10 concrete footings 10 for the cavity brick exterior walls 11
of a house, and, within the boundary of these walls, for a
0i"" granular fill 12 upon which a concrete slab floor 13
is to be laid.
:i "When the granular fill 12, which is normally
15 of gravel and/or sand, has been laid and levelled to about
00** half its final depth, there is laid thereon an assembly of
interconnected perforated conduits 14. The conduits may be
of any suitable type resistant to corrosion and/or signifioant
deterioration as a consequence of being laid in soil and/or
20 in contact with concrete, and/or of exposure to pesticidal
chemicals. Copper pipes have been found satisfactory in
this regard, but certain plastics may also satisfy these
requirements.
The perforations 15 of the conduit may be of any
desired form, such as round holes, or longitudinal or arcuate
slots. The conduit is laid in a pattern to suit the particular configuration of the foundation excavation, ensuring that no part of the sub-foundation soil layer in more than a predetermined distance from some part of the conduit. Thus, in the house plan shown in Fig. 1, consisting in essence of two elongated rectangular wings interconnected by a third rectangular section, the conduits
14 are laid out in the form of closed loops A and B in the
sub-foundation soil of both of the two wings, these two.
closed loops being interconnected by a pair of parallel *Sao
00000010 conduits 14 in the sub-foundation soil of the connecting too: section. The conduit assembly may be made up of straight
*00 lengths of perforatid copper pipe interconnected by elbows and T-piece connectors of conventional type.
In the example shown, the assembly of conduits
15 has two filling points indicated generally at 16, one to
each of the elongated closed loops A and B, these filling data points being hereinafter more fully described.
A furthor layer of sand or other suitable
granular fill is laid upon the initial fill and upon the
assembly of conduits laid thereon, and then, in usual
fashion, a layer 17 of polythene sheeting is applied over
this fill, and the concrete slab 13 Is laid thereon. As shown particularly in Fig. 2, each of the
filling points 16 comprises a length, or interconnected
lengths, of non-perkbrated conduit 18 connected at one end by a T-piece connector 19 to an appropriate one of the perforated conduits 14, carried out through the inner section of a cavity brick exterior wall 11, up between the two spaced brick wall sections, and then out through the outer wall section at a convenient height. The extremity of the conduit 18 is threaded, and is normally closed by a screw-on sealing closure cap 19, a suitable protective shield or ccwiing 20 being mounted on the wall o 11 to protect the end of the conduit 18 and its closure
19 from weathering and accidenta1 damage.
10 When it is considered necessary or desirable to
treat the soil under the foundation to prevent, or to
eliminate, a termite, fungus or like infestation, the
closure cap 19 is unscrewed, and the appropriate treating
chemical is introduced to the filling point under pressure,
15 a chemical injection device being connected to the threaded
end of the conduit 17 by a suitable coupling. The treating fluid will pass through the assembly of perforated conduits
14, and outwardly through the perforations in the conduit
to the surrounding granular fill 12, which consequently
20 becomes thoroughly and effectively permeated by the pesticide. It will be apparent that treat-nent in this manner will b
simple and convenient and much less costly, though far more
efficient, than methods previously used.
The invention, although of simple character, will
be found to be very effective in achieving the objects for
which it has been devised. It will, of course, be understood that the particular embodiment of the invention herein described and illustrated may be subject to many modificationo of constructional detail and designp which will be readily apparent to skilled persons, without
3 departing from the ambit of the invention as defined by
the appended claims.
