1 41 4 Actual Inventor: Address for Service: NOT KNOWN Spruson Ferguson, Patent Attorneys, Level 33 St Martins Tower, 31 Market Street, Sydney, New South Wales, 2000, Australia Complete Specification for the invention entitled: A Fence And Post Assembly The following statement is a full description of this best method of performing it known to me/us invention, including the S007778 5815/2 5805/2 0
NC,
-1- The present invention relates to fence constructions and more particularly to assemblies to join rails to a fence post.
Available fence constructions are generally not designed for security purposes. They are particularly vulnerable in respect of the joins between the rails and the post.
It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.
There is disclosed herein an assembly to join a rail to a fence post, said assembly including a mounting bracket to pass around the post and to spi.cts be secured thereto, said bracket having a sp ge-t to be telescopically received within the end of a rail, and a sealing member surround said n m rAu 0 o end of said rail, and having a peripheral portion contoured to snugly So engage the post to generally sealingly connect the rail to the post, and sea\in9 embep e o l ed bt rapc spi d wherein said sleeve has an internal projection t .gage sai pigg-t o to retain said soe--in a position sealingly connecting said rail and post.
SA preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: o 'o Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a fence post and a rail S attached thereto; 20 Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of the rail and post of o Figure 1; Figure 3 is a schematic end elevation of the rail and post of Figure 1; S*'o Figure 4 is a schematic sectioned side elevation of the rail and post of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a schematic part sectioned perspective view of the rail and post of Figure 1; and Figure 6 are schematic side elevations, sectioned elevations, and end elevation of an alternative sleeve to be used with an alternative rail and post construction.
In Figures 1 to 5 there is schematically depicted a fence post joined to a horizontal rail 11. The fence post 10 is joined to the rail by means of a mounting bracket 12. The mounting bracket 12 has a pair of @p gt 13 which are telescopically received within the rails 11. The bracket 12 is also provided with a base portion 14 which is secured to the post 10 by means of rivets or other fasteners sp 1 ot- The spigg-et 13, of this particular embodiment, are of a "U-shaped" transverse cross section and are shaped to be telescopically received 0

Ot TO: THE COMMISSIONER OF PATENTS IMT/237T o 1 i_ -2within the rails 11.
Surrounding the end portion of the rail 11, so as to sealingly connect the rail 11 to the post 10, there is provided a sealing sleeve 16.
The sleeve 16, of this particular embodiment, is of a generally cylindrical configuration, and has a contoured end face 17 shaped to snugly engage the to circular configuration of the postV-7. A recess 18 is provided to accommodate the mounting bracket 12. The sleeve 16 is preferably formed of a plastics material.
The sleeve 16 has a cylindrical internal surface 23 which snugly engages the end of the rail 11. Still further, the sleeve 16 is internally provided with a pair of opposing abutments 19, which provide seats 20 which °o engage the ends of the \s-pi4ots- 13. The seats 20 terminate with barbs 21 o;4O! which snap engage over the extremities 22 of the spggo-s 13. The barbs 21 o are positioned relative to the surface 17 so that the surface 17 is j u J5 compressed against the post In an alternative configuration, a sleeve 30 could be provided, which sleeve 30 is adapted to attach a rail, of square cross section, with a post also of a square or rectangular cross section. Again, the sleeve 30 is oo provided with abutments 31 which provide a seat 32 to engage the rail, while a barb 33 is also provided. In this particular embodiment an internal surface 34 is provided which is of a square configuration.

Claims (3)
- 3- The claims defining the invention are as follows: 1. An assembly to join a rail to a fence post, said assembly including a mounting bracket to pass around the post and to be secured thereto, said bracket having a spigot to be telescopically received within the end of a rail, and a sealing member to surround said end of said rail, and having a peripheral portion contoured to snugly engage the post to, 5*q %cn eym Der generally sealingly connect the rail to the post, and wherein a'ld &I-ee 5 C 9 Me has an internal projection engaged by said spigot to retain said sl--eey in a position sealingly connecting said rail and post. 0 2. The assembly of Claim 1, wherein said projection includes an abutment which engages said spigot. 3. The assembly of Claim 2, wherein said spigot engages said abutmntCs tha Mre 0 b e r abutment sothatsaid slgwla-when installed is compressed against the post.
- 4. The assembly of any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein said mounting 0 C, o o bracket is provided with a pair of spigots which in use, are horizontally o aligned and located on opposite sides of the post to enable the attachment thereto of sealing members and rails, which are also horizontally aligned. The assembly of any one of Claims 1 to 4, wherein the sealing member/s has a transverse cross section complimentary to the rail so as to sealingly connect the rail to the post.
- 6. An assembly to sealingly connect a rail and fence post, 0 substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
