They are particularly vulnerable in respect of the 5 joins between the rails and the post.

It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate the above disadvantage.

There is disclosed herein an assembly to join a rail to a fence post, said assembly including a mounting bracket to pass around the post 10 and to be secured thereto, said bracket having a spigot slidably received within the end of a rail, and a sealing sleeve surrounding said end of said rail, and having a contoured peripheral end portion and wherein said sleeve has an internal projection to engage said spigot or to retain said sleeve in position.

15 A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Figure 1 is a schematic perspective view of a fence post and a rail attached thereto;

Figure 2 is a schematic perspective view of the rail and post of 20 Figure 1;

Figure 3 is a schematic end elevation of the rail and post of Figure 1;

Figure 4 is a schematic sectioned side elevation of the rail and post of Figure 1;

25 Figure 5 is a schematic part sectioned perspective view of the rail and post of Figure 1; and

Figure 6 are schematic side elevations, sectioned elevations, and end elevation of an alternative sleeve to be used with an alternative rail and post construction.

30 In Figures 1 and 5 there is schematically depicted a fence post 10

joined to a horizontal rail 11. The fence post 10 is joined to the rail by means of a mounting bracket 12. The mounting bracket 12 has a pair of spiggots 13 which are telescopically received within the rails 11. The bracket 12 is also provided with a base portion 14 which 1s secured to 35 the post 10 by means of rivets or other fasteners 15.

The spiggots 13, of this particular embodiment, are of a "U-shaped" M^tasve'rse cross section and are shaped to be telescopical ly received

1 'M1

tf C E \

- 2 -

22 936 1

within the ra1Is 11.

Surrounding the end portion of the rail 11, so as to sealingly connect the rail 11 to the post 10, there is provided a sealing sleeve 16. The sleeve 16, of this particular embodiment, 1s of a generally cylindrical 5 configuration, and has a contoured end face 17 shaped to snugly engage the circular configuration of the post 17. A recess 18 is provided to accommodate the mounting bracket 12. The sleeve 16 is preferably formed of a plastics material.

The sleeve 16 has a cylindrical internal surface 23 which snugly 10 engages the end of the rail 11. Still further, the sleeve 16 is internally provided with a pair of opposing abutments 19, which provide seats 20 which engage the ends of the spiggots 13. The seats 20 terminate with barbs 21 which snap engage over the extremities 22 of the spiggots 13. The barbs 21 are positioned relative to the surface 17 so that the surface 17 is 15 compressed against the post 10.

In an alternative configuration, a sleeve 30 could be provided, which sleeve 30 is adapted to attach a rail, of square cross section, with a post also of a square or rectangular cross section. Again, the sleeve 30 is provided with abutments 31 which provide a seat 32 to engage the rail, 20 while a barb 33 Is also provided. In this particular embodiment an Internal surface 34 is provided which is of a square configuration.

DG:0122t
