Abstract

Between the central equipment (ZE) and a terminal equipment (E1) connected to it, information items are alternately transmitted. The binary values can be formed by a lowering of the current or by the closed-circuit current value of the signal line. For the information items to be transmitted in the opposite direction, a voltage modulation can be provided. In the modem existing in the central equipment (ZSt), a weighting of the binary characters independent of the choice of current values is carried out for the evaluation of the binary characters formed via the current modulation. Thus, binary characters can be reliably decoded in any case, even if terminal equipments having a different mean current consumption are connected. To make this possible, a voltage comparator (K) is used, one input (x) of which is supplied with the voltage derived from the upper current value and at least approximately corresponding to this value and the other input (y) of which is supplied with the voltage corresponding to the instantaneous current value. Independently of the type of the respective terminal equipment, any change in the binary value then results in a corresponding change in the output signal of the voltage comparator. <IMAGE>
