Description

A FOOD STORAGE CONTAINER Technical Field The present invention relates to containers and in particular to container for storing food. Background of the Invention Typical food storage containers are suitable for storing one food type such as a dry food type or a wet food type. For example, the container for instant noodles generally stores only dried food types such as noodles and seasonings, and a wet food type such as water is added just prior to cooking. Water is added to the container and mixed in with the noodles and seasonings. It would be beneficial to provide a single container capable of storing different food types. There is a further need to provide a container suitable for storing the food types and steaming at least one of the food types within the container. Object of the Invention It is an object of the present invention in its preferred form to provide a storage container where one food type can be stored separately from another food type. Summary of the Invention The present invention provides a food storage container having a base portion, an intermediate portion and a lid. The base portion includes a bottom and at least one sidewall extending upwardly from the bottom to form an opening. The intermediate portion is insertable within the base portion, and the lid is attachable to the base portion and configured to cover the opening of the base portion. The base portion is configured to hold a first food type and the intermediate portion is configured to hold a second food type. Preferably, the intermediate portion and the base portion cooperate to form a gap between the bottom of the base portion and the bottom of the intermediate portion when the intermediate portion is inserted within the base portion. In one embodiment the intermediate portion is configured to isolate the second food type from the first food type. In another embodiment the intermediate portion includes apertures to allow fluid to pass between the base portion and the intermediate portion. 1 Preferably, the lid includes a recess compatible with the bottom of the base portion so that a first food storage container is stackable on a second food storage container. Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is an exploded view of a food storage container including a bowl, an insert tray, and a lid according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a top plan view of the bowl of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a side view of the bowl of Figure 1; Figure 4 is a perspective view of the bowl of Figure 1; Figure 5 is a top plan view of the insert tray of Figure 1; Figure 6 is a first side view of the insert tray of Figure 1; Figure 7 is a perspective view of the insert tray of Figure 1; Figure 8 is a second side view of the insert tray of Figure 1; Figure 9 is a top plan view of the lid of Figure 1; Figure 10 is a side view of the lid of Figure 1; and Figure 11 is a perspective view of the lid of Figure 1. Detailed Description of a Preferred Embodiment Referring to the drawings, the food storage container 10 is a bowl 12, having an insert tray 14, and a lid 16. The bowl 12 can be used to hold a first food type such as water, broth or the like. 2 The insert tray 14 can be used to hold a second food type such as powder, seasonings, noodles or other food types. The lid 16 is configured to attach to the bowl 12. The food storage container 10 allows different food types to be stored separately within the same container. A typical application would be to store soup or broth in the bowl 12 and noodles or powder and seasoning in the insert tray 14. The storage container 10 may be formed from polypropylene or other suitable material and may be microwavable. The insert tray 14 may include apertures or orifices 16 in the floor 18 to allow fluid to pass between the bowl 12 and the insert tray 14. For example, the food storage container 10 may be used to store and cook soup. In such case a broth may be stored in the bowl 14 and noodles may be stored in the insert tray 14. The food types may be heated using a microwave which will heat the broth create steam which escapes through the orifices thus cooking the noodles. Alternatively, the storage container 10 may be formed from a heat resistant material such as C-PET or polypropylene. The storage container 10 can be used in an oven or on a stove top for steam cooking. Referring to Figures 2, 3 and 4, the bowl 12 includes a base 18 and a side wall 20 extending upwardly and outwardly from the base 18 to define an opening 19. The side wall 20 terminates at rim 22. Rim 22 is offset outwardly from the side wall 20 creating a shoulder 30 on the inside of the side wall 20. As discussed below the shoulder 30 is a landing for the insert tray 14. Referring to Figures 5, 6 and 7, the insert tray 14 includes a base 24 and a side wall 26 extending upwardly and outwardly from the base 18. The side wall 26 terminates at rim 28. The side wall 26 may include a plurality of ribs 52 extending between the rim 28 and the base 24 for reinforcement. In use, rim 28 rests on the shoulder 30 of the bowl 12. Because the insert tray 14 is not as deep as the bowl 12 there is a gap 32 between the base 24 of the insert tray 14 and the base 18 of the bowl 12 when the insert tray 14 is positioned within the bowl 12. The insert tray 14 sits generally below the rim 22 of the bowl 12 which allows application of a heat seal film (not shown) if required. The use of heat sealed film allows the container 10 to be packed in a modified packaging atmosphere (MAP) if desired. The base 24 may include apertures 34 which allow fluid to pass between the bowl 12 and the insert tray 14. This is particularly useful for steam cooking in a microwave or on a stove top. Referring to Figures 9, 10 and 11, the lid 16 includes a top portion 36 and a rim 38. The rim 38 is configured to fit over the rim 22 of the bowl 12 to cover the opening 19 of the bowl 12. The rim 38 extends generally perpendicular to the top portion 36 and includes an internal shoulder 50. In use, the internal shoulder 50 engages the rim 22 of the bowl 12 forming a snap lock fit to secure the lid 16 to the bowl 12. The snap lock fit prevents leakage from the container 10. The top portion 36 3 of the lid 16 includes a recess 40 having a base 42 and a side wall 44 extending outwardly away from the base 42. The base 18 of the bowl 12 sits within the recess 40 of the lid 16. This is useful for stacking one storage container 10 on top of another. The lid 16 includes a tab 46 extending generally perpendicular from the rim 38 for facilitating removal of the lid 16 from the bowl 12. Although the invention has been described with reference to a specific example, it will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms. 4
