Abstract

In order to apply embossments (10) on webs or pre-cuts made of thin cardboard, particularly on pre-cuts for collars (13) of a cigarette pack of the hinged-lid pack type, the material web (18) made of thin cardboard is conveyed between rolls, that is, particularly between a cutter roll (19) and a counter roll (20). Both rolls (19, 20) are provided with embossing pieces (24, 25), which have corresponding structures for generating protrusions and depressions oriented transversely to the material web (18).

Description

Applicant: - 1 - FOC-852-WO May 25, 2010/9324 Focke & Co (GmbH & Co. KG) Siemensstrape 10 5 27283 Verden Device for embossing in particular the collar of a hinged-lid pack for cigarettes 10 Description The invention relates to an arrangement for applying material deformation or embossing to blanks made of (thin) cardboard or similar packaging material for 15 producing packs, in particular cigarette packs, wherein the blanks or a material web, by means of which blanks are produced by being severed from the material web, can be guided through between embossing means, in particular embossing rollers, arranged on opposite 20 sides of the blanks or of the material web, and the material deformation or embossing can be produced by pressure being transferred onto the blank or onto the material web by the embossing means. 25 The operation of applying material deformation, that is to say embossing, in the region of a collar of a cigarette pack of the hinge-lid-box type as a collar blank is being severed from a material web made of thin cardboard is known from WO 2006/012960 Al. In the case 30 of this known arrangement, collar blanks are severed from the material web in the region of rollers. One of the rollers, that is to say a blade roller, has contoured severing blades or cutting edges provided on the circumference. The roller located opposite, that is 35 to say the mating roller, is designed with a smooth lateral surface. Embossing means are fitted on the blade roller, adjacent to the cutting blades, and cause the material web or the collar blank to be deformed in - 2 the region between the rollers. The embossing effect, however, is unsatisfactory. It is an object of the invention to develop further the 5 arrangement mentioned in the introduction such that the blanks or the material web made of thin cardboard or similar material can be optimally embossed, in particular in the region of a collar blank. 10 In order to achieve this object, the arrangement according to the invention is characterized in that the interacting embossing means, in particular embossing rollers, have corresponding embossing regions or embossing components with elevations and depressions, 15 on the one hand, and with corresponding depressions and elevations, on the other hand, such that the material which is to be deformed can be subjected to forming pressure on either side. 20 Accordingly, the special feature of the invention is that the thin cardboard is subjected to the action of embossing means in the manner of a female die and a male die. This gives rise to marked and permanent embossing deformation even in the case of very short 25 operating cycles. In particular, interacting embossing regions or embossing components are arranged on circulating rollers of a blade-roller unit for producing collar blanks, wherein the collar blanks are used for producing cigarette packs of the hinge-lid-box 30 type. As an alternative, it is also possible for the embossing to be produced cyclically by appropriate punches which can be moved in relation to one another and have corresponding embossing regions. The effective embossing operation is combined with the operation of 35 applying a severing cut for the blank. The embossing components are arranged in a releasable manner in recesses of the rollers, that is to say in - 3 the blade roller, on the one hand, and the mating roller, on the other hand, and so, during the embossing operation, they are located on either side of the blank or of the material web and produce the embossing on 5 account of the transfer of forming pressure. Protrusions of the one embossing component here act in the region of corresponding depressions of the other embossing component. At least one of the embossing components is arranged in an adjustable manner for the 10 purpose of altering the relative positioning, in particular in conjunction with the dimensioning of the cutting edges of the blades arranged on the circumference of the blade roller. 15 As an alternative, it is possible for corresponding embossing regions to be incorporated or formed in lateral surfaces of the interacting rollers (blade roller and mating roller) . It is advantageous here if at least the mating roller has a casing made of 20 particularly hard material, that is to say a casing made of ceramic material or sintered metal. The casing of the relevant roller, in particular the casing consisting of hard material, has embossing regions with protrusions and depressions, in particular functioning 25 as a female die, incorporated in it. Further details and features of the invention will be explained more specifically hereinbelow with reference to the drawings, in which: 30 fig. 1 shows an open cigarette pack of the hinge-lid box type with embossing on the collar, fig. 2 shows, on an enlarged scale, a detail II of the 35 pack according to fig. 1, - 4 fig. 3 shows an arrangement for producing embossing on (collar) blanks, in a schematic side view and in longitudinal section, 5 fig. 4 shows, on an enlarged scale, a transverse view of the rollers as seen along viewing plane IV IV from fig. 3, fig. 5 shows, on a yet larger scale, an embossing 10 component in detail form, fig. 6 shows, on an enlarged scale, a detail of the arrangement according to fig. 3, that is to say a detail VI, 15 fig. 7 shows a transverse view VII-VII in fig. 6, fig. 8 shows a cross section VIII-VIII in fig. 6, 20 fig. 9 shows, on a slightly enlarged scale, a detail IX-IX from fig. 8 with the relative positioning altered, and fig. 10 shows a cross section X-X from fig. 4 through 25 rollers, albeit of a different embodiment. The drawings illustrate the preferred application area, that is to say the application of embossing 10 to a cigarette pack made of thin cardboard, in this case 30 configured as a hinge-lid box or hinge-lid pack. This type of pack comprises, as standard, a (lower) box part 11, a lid 12, which is connected in a pivotable manner thereto, and a collar 13, which in this case comprises a separate blank. This collar forms a collar 35 front wall 14 and collar side flaps 15. The collar 13 is arranged in the box part 11 and connected on the inside at least to one box front wall 16. An upper sub region projects out of the box part 11 and is visible - 5 when the lid 12 is open. A cuboidal cigarette block 17 is arranged, as pack contents, within the hinge-lid box designed in this way. 5 The embossing 10 is applied, in the case of the cigarette pack or hinge-lid box with the above construction, to the collar 13, to be precise to the collar front wall 14, in a region which projects out of the box part 11. The embossing 10 here is in the form 10 of a decorative element. However, it is possible as an alternative, or in addition, to apply embossing containing information, that is to say characters or identification symbols. 15 The embossing 10 is produced in a particular way, that is to say by material deformation which emerges from the plane of the material of the embossing carrier on one side or on either side. In the case of the present exemplary embodiment (figs. 6 and 8), the embossing is 20 designed such that on one side, that is to say in the direction of the free, visible side of the collar 13, it projects beyond the plane of the blank or of the collar front wall 14. 25 The embossing 10 is applied, in the region of a continuously operating embossing subassembly using rotating embossing rollers, between which is moved the blank which is to be embossed or a material web 18 made of (thin) cardboard. In order to apply the embossing 10 30 to a collar 13, use is made of a collar apparatus (fig. 3) with rollers arranged on either side of the material web 18, in particular above and beneath the same. These rollers are in the form of an (upper) blade roller 19 and a (lower) mating roller 20. The material web 18 is 35 conveyed through (continuously) between the two rollers 19, 20, wherein the embossing 10 is applied in a precisely positioned manner and, approximately at the same time, a blank for the collar 13 is severed. The - 6 material web 18 is conveyed by a drive means, in this case by advancement rollers 21, 22. Spaced apart in front of the rollers 19, 20 is a means for sensing marking on the material web, that is to say a sensor 5 23, which senses printed marks on the material web 18 and thus controls the rollers 19, 20. Embossing regions, in the exemplary embodiment according to figs. 3 to 9 embossing components 24, 25, 10 are fitted on the circumference, that is to say on the lateral surface, of the rollers 19, 20. These embossing components are separate forming components, which are arranged in recesses 26, 27 of the two rollers 19, 20. Accordingly, the two rollers 19, 20 are designed such 15 that they subject the material web 18 or the blank to a forming, embossing action. The embossing components 24, 25, or the embossing parts 28, 29 thereof, are designed with corresponding protrusions 30 and depressions 31. The shapes or structures of the embossing parts 28, 29 20 of the rollers 19, 20 are coordinated with one another in the manner of a positive mold and a negative mold, or in the manner of a male die and a female die, and so for example a protrusion 30 of the one embossing part enters into the depression 31 of the other embossing 25 part, with the result that, in the region of the embossing 10, the cardboard of the material web 18 projects toward one side and/or the other side beyond the plane of the web. In the case of the present exemplary embodiment, the embossing part 28 of the 30 blade roller 19 is designed as a male die and the embossing part 29 of the mating roller 20 is designed as a female die. Accordingly, when the blank or collar 13 is in the finished state, the embossing 10 is directed toward the outside, that is to say toward the 35 visible side of the collar 13 when the lid is open. The embossing components 24, 25 are arranged in a releasable manner in the pocket-like recesses 26, 27 on - 7 the circumference of the rollers 19, 20. In the case of the present exemplary embodiment (fig. 6) a respective extension 32 is formed, as a lower-level step, alongside the embossing part 28, 29. In this region, 5 the embossing component 24, 25 is fastened on the roller 19, 20 by way of a fastening means, in this case by way of a screw 33. The screw 30, or a head of the same, is located in a depression of the embossing component 24, 25. At least the embossing part 28, 29 10 projects (slightly) beyond the lateral surface of the roller 19, 20. In the case of the collar-apparatus embodiment, one of the rollers 19, 20, that is to say the blade roller 19, 15 is provided with a number of blades or cutting edges 34, which correspond to the contour of the blank which is to be produced, in this case the contour of a collar 13 (fig. 4) . The embossing components 24, 25 are arranged in the immediate vicinity of a cutting edge 20 34, the latter following in the direction of rotation. The embossing components 24, 25 are fitted in an adjustable manner on the rollers 19, 20, that is to say in respect of the positioning of the embossing 25 parts 28, 29 relative to the lateral surface of the rollers 19, 20. In the case of the present exemplary embodiment, the embossing component 24, 25 is mounted on spacers within the recess 26, 27, that is to say on pieces of sheet metal 35, preferably made of resilient 30 steel. A plurality of pieces of sheet metal 35 are grouped together to form a support for an embossing component 24, 25 on the inner base of the recess 26, 27, to be precise preferably with a bore in the region of the screw 33, and so the pieces of sheet metal 35 35 are fixed. The relative positioning of the embossing component 24, 25 is determined by virtue of the number of pieces of sheet metal 35 being altered, that is to say by virtue of pieces of sheet metal 35 being removed - 8 or added. Alteration is required, in particular, with adaptation to the effective operating depth of the cutting edges 34. 5 An advantageous alternative works with embossing components 24, 25 of different dimensioning or (radial) depth. Accordingly, for a collar apparatus, a set supplied with embossing components 24 for the blade roller 19 is provided, which components are inserted in 10 accordance with the dimensioning of the blade roller or of the cutting edges 34 and are exchanged when the cutting edges 34 are reground. The blanks of a collar 13 which have been severed in 15 the region of the rollers 19, 20, and provided with at least one embossing 10, are transported away by conveying means or conveying rollers 36. These are designed such that there is contact between the conveying rollers 36 and the blank for the collar 13 20 merely in lateral regions, whereas at least the region of the embossing 10, as a result of at least one of the conveying rollers 36 being a reduced diameter, provides for a spacing or clearance 43 in order to avoid contact between the roller casings and the embossing 10. 25 A region of the material web 18 or of a blank which is subjected to material deformation by the embossing parts 28, 29 for the purpose of applying the embossing 10 is fixed by pressure-exerting means, and 30 so this avoids the formation of creasing in a region adjacent to the embossing 10. In the case of the present exemplary embodiment, the embossing means or the embossing component 24, 25 is provided with a supporting periphery or supporting ridge 37, which in 35 the present case is designed as a frame or as a closed surround (fig. 5). The supporting ridge 37 encloses the region of the protrusions 30 and/or depressions 31. The embossing components 24, 25 are advantageously designed - 9 such that the supporting ridge 37 is provided on an embossing component, in the present case on the embossing component of the blade roller 19 (fig. 8) . The supporting ridge 37 butts under elevated pressure 5 against the material web 18 during the embossing operation, and so the material web, in conjunction with the embossing component located opposite, is clamped in position (fig. 9). This means that the material web 18 or the blank is fixed in place against contracting and 10 forming undesired creasing. The supporting ridge 37 may, correspondingly, be provided on both embossing components 24, 25. The supporting ridge 37, in the region of the embossing 10, can produce a feint border 41 around the embossing 10 (fig. 2). 15 An advantageous alternative embodiment of an embossing subassembly based on rollers is shown in fig. 10. The upper roller may be designed as blade roller 19, to be precise preferably with all the features of the 20 exemplary embodiment described above. The mating roller 20 is designed differently. It comprises a roller core 38 made of steel or some other material. A roller casing 39 consists of a high-strength material, in particular ceramic material or sintered metal. 25 The roller casing 39 is provided with a plurality of embossing regions 40 formed on it or incorporated in it. These embossing regions are coordinated, in respect of the position and configuration, with the embossing 30 components 24 arranged on the blade roller 19, and so the interaction of the embossing regions 40, on the one hand, and of the embossing components 24, on the other hand, produces the embossing 10 in the manner described. An embossing arrangement designed in this 35 way can be produced with relatively low outlay as far as the mating roller 20 is concerned. In the case of this embodiment of a roller, in particular mating - 10 roller 20, the embossing regions 40 are designed in female-die form. At least the mating roller 20, or the lateral surface 5 of the same, is assigned a scraper 42, which frees the circumference of the mating roller 20 from material residues. The arrangements can also be used in the same manner, 10 or in an analogous manner, for applying embossing to individual, prefabricated pack blanks, in particular for embossing blanks for cigarette packs of the hinge lid-box type. These blanks are conveyed through one after the other between the rollers provided 15 exclusively with embossing means.
