Description

1 A BURNER ASSEMBLY Technical Field The present invention relates to burner assemblies and more particularly but exclusively to burner assemblies for barbecues, with the burner assembly adapted to use gas as a fuel. Background of the Invention It is common for barbecues to use a gas a fuel. The gas may come directly from a gas supply line or alternatively a reservoir in the form of a bottle. Gas barbecues, and for that matter most barbecues, suffer from the disadvantage that they are not efficient in respect of fuel usage and are subject to flame flare ups. A further disadvantage of known barbecues is that in the area below the burners, where fat often accumulates, that area can become very hot. Object of the Invention It is the object of the present invention to overcome or substantially ameliorate at is least one of the above disadvantages. Summary of the Invention There is disclosed herein a barbecue burner assembly to provide radiant and convection heat for the purpose of cooking, said assembly including: a hollow housing providing a cavity to receive a fuel burning nozzle; a first plate supported by the housing above the cavity to be heated by the burnt fuel; a second plate supported by the housing and positioned above the first plate but spaced therefrom; wherein said first plate provides radiant energy directed at the second plate, the second plate provides for the transmission of radiant energy through the second plate, and said second plate is arcuate so as to upwardly convex.
2 Preferably, said first plate is generally planar. Preferably, said first plate is formed of a ceramic material. Preferably, said second plate is glass. More preferably, said second plate is quartz glass. There is further disclosed herein in combination, the assembly of a cooking surface upon which food is to rest, the cooking surface being located above the second plate. Preferably, the cooking surface is generally horizontally oriented. Preferably, the cooking surface is a grid. There is still further disclosed herein a barbecue incorporating the above burner assembly. Brief Description of the Drawings A preferred form of the present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein: Figure 1 is a schematic a schematic isometric view of a burner assembly; Figure 2 is a schematic parts exploded isometric view of the burner assembly of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a schematic parts exploded side view of the assembly of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is a schematic bottom plan view of the assembly as shown in Figure 2. Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment In Figures 1 to 4 of the accompanying drawings there is schematically depicted a barbecue burner assembly 10.
3 The assembly 10 includes a hollow housing 12 providing a cavity 13 into which there projects a nozzle 14. Preferably the nozzle 14 is adapted to burn gas. The housing 12 has a step 15 generally surrounding the cavity 13 and adapted to support a first plate 16. Preferably the plate 16 is ceramic and generally planar. The plate 16 is above but spaced from the nozzle 14. Also supported by the housing 12 is a second plate 17. In this embodiment, the second plate 17 is generally arcuate so as to be upwardly convex and may be part of a cylinder. Preferably the second plate 17 is formed of quartz glass. In operation of the above described embodiment, fuel burnt by the nozzle 14 heats the first plate 16 that produces radiant and convection heat. The second plate 17 is heated and provides for the transmission of radiant heat therethrough. The above described preferred embodiment has a number of advantages including providing protection for the first plate 16, provides for more efficient burning of fuel, provides for the greater transmission of infrared radiation to a generally horizontally oriented barbecue cooking surface 18, such as a grid, above the assembly 10 and upon which food is to rest. A further advantage is that the assembly 10 is less likely to suffer flame flare ups. A still further advantage of the above described preferred embodiment is that the area below the nozzle 14 is maintained at a lower temperature relative to conventional barbecues.
