Patents Act 1990 COMPLETE SPECIFICATION STANDARD PATENT Applicant(s): HAGER ELECTRO GMBH Invention Title: TERMINAL TO CONNECT AN ELECTRIC CONDUCTOR The following statement is a full description of this invention, including the best method of performing it known to me/us: 2 Terminal to connect an electric conductor The invention concerns a terminal to connect an electric conductor, that in a housing that forms a fixture frame has a bending spring which clamps the conductor end in the assembled state and a pivotably mounted actuating organ with a cam disc for an increased tensioning of the spring and consequently opening the terminal, while in turn the actuating organ, for which it has a receptacle, is actuated by an end section of a long tool, particularly of a screwdriver, to be used as a lever.
Such a terminal is known from DE 195 29 028 Al. In the open position of the terminal the actuating organ of this terminal has, in principle, a stable end position due to the fact that a flat recess in the cam disc abuts against a flat bulge of the bending spring. Then both hands of the fitter are free to carry out his work. In the case of an inadvertent knocking of the actuating organ or the tool the actuating organ can be, however, moved from its stable end position and it will spring back.
The object of the invention is to increase the stability of the actuating organ in the open position of the terminal.
According to the invention this objective is achieved by that in the open position of the terminal the end of the tool can be further pushed in up to a housing part, by virtue of this the tool is locked against pivoting back and consequently the actuating organ is held or secured in the open position.
H.\LindaKeep\spec\P51581.doc 15/12/03 3 The locking engagement, for example an engagement of the tip of the screwdriver in a pocket formed in the housing, can be incomparably deeper and be therefore more secure than the engagement mentioned of a flat bulge on a flat recess.
Not even a dead centre of the cam disc on the spring is needs to be reached. Nevertheless, the actuating organ will be held by being locked in accordance with the invention.
When the cam disc lies with its dead centre on the spring, the locking of the actuating organ in the open position is secured.
In a preferred manner the receptacle for the end section of the tool is a passing-through recess in the actuating organ and the tool can be pushed further past the receptacle; the housing part mentioned is then approximately an extension of the receptacle. In the case of the pocket it is essentially exactly the extension of the receptacle and a wall of the pocket forms the locking housing part.
Basically, however, other arrangements of the locking are also possible. For example, the tool may be laterally free at the end of the receptacle and have a locking engagement towards the side.
According to a further advantageous development of the invention the actuating organ is arranged in a receptacle for the end section of the tool and the cam disc formed on the receptacle.
The result is a smaller requirement of space and material with a clear separation between a space claimed for the tool and being available for the electrical clamping.
\\melbfiles\home\LindaKeep\pec\P51581.doc 15/12/03 4 A further advantageous development is characterised by a lever spring arranged on the shaft of the pivoting actuating organ and acting in a restoring manner on the actuating organ or a bending spring acting in the initial position of the actuating organ in a recess on the circumference of the actuating organ, preferably the cam disc.
Accordingly, the actuating organ is held in its initial position even when a conductor end is clamped and thus the bending spring, clamping the conductor end, cannot exert any restoring force on the actuating organ. The actuating organ cannot disturb by wrongly positioning the conventional cover.
In a version of the invention instead of a pivotably mounted actuating organ with a cam disc the housing has a support for the end of the tool as a lever fulcrum and an actuating organ in the form of a pressure piece guided in the housing, that by pressing the section of the tool adjoining the end mentioned is displaceable by bending the spring; once again on this occasion in the open position of the terminal the end of the tool can be further pushed up to a housing part, by virtue of this the tool is locked against pivoting back and consequently the actuating organ is held in the open position.
For both versions a terminal with a construction known per se is particularly provided, whereby a conductor piece, with which the conductor end mentioned is to be joined in the terminal housing, is assembled with the bending spring in such a manner, that the bending spring with one leg lies on the conductor piece, with a bent leg is bent away \\melb_files\home$s\Linda\Keep\spec\P51581.doc 15/12/03 5 from it and then once again in the direction of the end of the first leg and past this bent into a third, slightly curved leg, in which a rectangular cut-out is situated, through which the conductor piece protrudes, while the bottom edge of the cut-out is pulled in the direction of the conductor piece and the conductor end presses the conductor piece from below.
The drawings illustrate embodiments of the invention.
Fig.l shows an isometric illustration of a terminal, partly exposed, Fig.2 shows a view of Fig.l from left and front, Fig.3 shows a section along line III-III of Fig.l, Fig.4 shows the same section as Fig.3, but in the open position of the terminal, shows a section along line V-V in Fig.l, but in the open position of the terminal, Fig.6 shows a combination of Figs.4 and 5 with a break between the two sectioning planes along the line Vi-

In a housing 1, forming the fixture frame (see first Fig.7) a conductor piece 2 is held, that at its end 3 is further connected in an overall fixture, e.g. an automatic cut-out.
The conductor piece 2 is combined with an essentially three-legged bending spring 4. One leg 5 lies on the conductor piece 2. One bending leg 6 is bent away from it.
Finally, a third, slightly curved leg 7 is bent away from this towards the end of the first leg. In the curved leg there is a rectangular cut-out 8. The offset other end 9 of the conductor piece 2 protrudes through this cut-out.
In the space 10 below the conductor piece 2 an entrance 11 guides the conductor end to be connected. When the bending spring 4 is depressed, the uninsulated end is inserted through the cut-out 8. When the bending spring is released, the bottom edge of the cut-out 8 presses the conductor end from below against the conductor piece 2.
To depress and release the bending spring 4 an actuating organ 12 is used. The actuating organ 12 is pivotably mounted on a shaft passing through the housing 1 and riveted, for example, on the outside of the wall of the housing. The shaft comprises a receptacle part 14 with a receptacle 15 for the end section 16 of a screwdriver 17 and a cam disc 18 formed laterally on the receptacle part 14. The cam disc 18 is situated above the bending spring 4. The receptacle part is pressed into its initial position by a lever spring 19 inserted into the other end of the receptacle part 14, as it is shown in Figs.l to 3.
\\melb_files\home$\Linda\Keep\spec\P51581.doc 15/12/03 7 To open the terminal the receptacle part 14 is pivoted by using the screwdriver 17, inserted into the receptacle as a lever, as a substitute with a protrusion 20 of the receptacle part 14 in Fig.7 by a finger indicated by 21.
By doing this the cam disc 18 glides over the bending spring 4 and depresses it. A stud 22, protruding from the housing 1 and enveloped approximately in a semi-circle by the bending spring 4, holds the leg 5 of the bending spring, that would otherwise bulge, against the conductor piece 2.
To secure the bending spring in the depressed position, in this position of the actuating organ 12 the screwdriver 17 is further pushed through the receptacle 15 with its flat or pointed end 23 into a pocket 24 of the fixture frame i.
The lateral wall 25 of the pocket 24 is locked now against a return pivoting.
To return the actuating organ 12, the screwdriver is pulled out from the pocket 24. If desired, it can be fully pulled out from the receptacle 15 and the actuating organ 12 reset by hand.
When now a conductor end is inserted into the cut-out 8, the bending spring 4 will not return to its initial position, in which it could hold the cam disc 18 and consequently the actuating organ 12 essentially in the initial position. Instead of that this task is carried out by the lever spring 19.
Incidentally, in Fig.7 one can recognise provisions to provide a wall portion 26, removed in Fig.7 but appearing in Fig.l, namely a hollow socket 27 and two recesses 28 \\melbfiles\homeS\Linda\Keep\pec\PS1581.doc 15/12/03 8 for the reciprocal engagement with a recess and hollow socket of the wall portion 26.
In Fig.8 instead of the lever spring 19 a bending spring 29 is provided, that in the operating position of the terminal engages a depression 35 on the cam disc, designated here by 30. The first mentioned bending spring has the reference number 31, the actuating organ 32 and the inserted conductor end 33. By pivoting the actuating organ 32 the cam disc 30 also depresses the bending spring in this case too. The depression 35 moves on this occasion over the bending spring 39.
In the other version illustrated in Fig.9 the actuating element is realised by a pressure piece 36.
A fourfold terminal is illustrated essentially from one side and exposed in the viewing direction.
Two entrances 37 situated opposite one another can be recognised, two with four bending springs 38 identical to the bending springs 4, and two studs 39 corresponding to the sockets 22. Two conductor pieces 40 have the function of the conductor piece 2, but have a different construction.
The pressure pieces 36 are guided in the housing designated by 41. The can be depressed by a screwdriver 42 and thus tension the bending spring 38. The screwdriver is introduced in{ that position as it is shown on the left of Fig.9 for the left terminal. It is then pivoted, whereby it is supported on a support indicated by 43 and presses the pressure piece, as illustrated on the right of Fig.9 \\melbfies\homeS\Linda\Keep\spec\P51581.doc 15/12/03 -9for the right terminal. In addition, this illustration shows already the next step: in the depressed position of the bending spring 38 the end of the screwdriver 42 locates a pocket, into which the screwdriver will be further pushed. It is then held against return pivoting via a wall 45 of the pocket and thus holds the terminal in the open position.
To close the terminal the screwdriver 42 is pulled out.

Claims (11)

1. A terminal to connect an electric conductor, that when 00 in a housing that forms a fixture frame has a bending spring which clamps the conductor end in the assembled state and a pivotably mounted actuating organ with a cam disc for an increased tensioning of the bending spring and consequently opening the terminal, while in turn the c ~actuating organ, for which it has a receptacle is actuated by an end section of a long tool, to be used as a lever, characterised in that in the open position of the terminal, the end of the tool can be further pushed in up to a housing part, and by virtue of this the tool is locked against pivoting back and consequently the actuating organ is held or secured in the open position.
2. A terminal according to claim 1, characterised in that the receptacle is a recess in the actuating organ.
3. A terminal according to claim 1 or 2, characterised in that the tool can be pushed further past the receptacle and the housing part mentioned is an extension of the receptacle.
4. A terminal according to claim 3, characterised in that the housing part is a wall of a pocket formed in the housing. A terminal according to any one of claims 1 to 4, characterised in that the actuating organ is arranged in a receptacle for the end section of the tool and the cam disc formed on the receptacle.
