Description
DESCRIPTION
Paint with magnetic or magnet attracting properties Magnetic displays such as magnetic signs, calendars, business cards, letters etc are commonly attached to fridge doors, office cabinets and other metal boards, which have been constructed from a solid magnetic metal. Traditionally such magnetic displays could not be created on non metallic surfaces, such as brick or plaster walls or wooden furniture.
This invention relates to coatings including paint and paint additives that have magnetic attractant or magnetic properties and that can be applied like traditional paint or ink by brushing, rolling or spraying the viscous or liquid mixture onto the surface and then letting it dry. Such a coating can be applied to almost any non-metallic or non magnetic attractant surface including wooden furniture, plaster, concrete and brick walls to create a magnetic receptive surface.
Any thus treated surface can become an easily changed magnetic display. Examples are walls of class rooms, children's rooms, shops, offices, factories and furniture.
By adding ferromagnetic particles to liquid coatings including primers, paints, inks and the like, the resulting mixture may be applied to any surface not normally having magnetic or magnetic receptive properties and giving the treated surface magnetic or magnetic receptive properties. Such a surface may be used for example to create a display holding magnetic calendars, toys, letters, advertising, and the like without requiring any adhesive, nails or any other mechanical attachment method.
A preferred method of producing such coating is obtained by mixing to a traditional primer a quantity of iron powder. The iron powder may vary in grade from 3 microns to several hundred microns.
A preferred mixture has been obtained by mixing about 20% in volume of iron powder, having a mixture of granules up to 45 micron in size, to a common formula of acrylic wall primer paint making up the remaining 80% in volume.
Suitable results have also been achieved with similarly proportioned oil based primers.
To obtain a coating with acceptable magnetic attractant properties at one, preferably two, solid coats of the mix should be applied to the surface.
Additional coats of traditional paint can be added to give the surface the desired colour and finish. Such a surface will appear visually identical to a non-magnetic or non magnetic attractant surface.
