Patents Act 1990 INNOVATION SPECIFICATION Invention Title: AUXILIARY BARBEQUE COOKING PLATES AND METHODS OF
COOKING
This invention is described in the following statement: AUXILIARY BARBEQUE COOKING PLATES AND METHODS OF
COOKING
TECHNICAL FIELD This invention relates to auxiliary cooking plates and methods of barbeque cooking using same.
BACKGROUND ART There are a large number of barbeque/type outdoor cookers in Australia and in other countries with similar climates.
The more popular types of barbeque are those provided with cast-iron grills and frying plates.
Cast iron grills and plates are heavy and difficult to clean.
If cast iron plates are not cleaned constantly tend to become unhygienic, and in the case of grill plates the vertical surfaces of the grill bars tend to flake and are likely to contaminate foods cooked thereon.
Ideally the cooking grills and plates should be thoroughly cleaned and dried after each use, however this type of maintenance is rarely carried out and what cleaning takes place is generally insitu cleaning using heated water and scraper devices.
Most barbeque users have dishwasher machines available however because of the size and weight of cast iron grills and plates and the likelihood of damaging delicate plastics coated wire holding racks within a dishwasher the machines are rarely used.
Another problem with cast iron grilling and frying plates is that cooked food is invariably charred and "blackened" and becomes rubbery and unattractive.
According to some reports charred food may be carcinogenic.
The use of food-grade aluminium cooking plates will substantially eliminate these disadvantages.
It is an object of the present invention to provide an auxiliary cooking plate for barbeques which is light-weight, cooks without discolouring or charring foods, is dishwasher friendly, and which is particularly suitable for public barbeques particularly those with existing cast iron grills and plates.
It is a further object of the present invention to provide, to enhance hygiene and generally make barbeque cooking a more enjoyable experience.
Further objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the ensuing description which is given by way of example.
DISCLOSURE OF INVENTION According to the present invention there is provided a method of barbeque cooking comprising the steps of placing an aluminium cooking plate or grill over cooking plates or grills of an existing barbeque and cooking foods on the aluminium cooking plate or grill using a heat source of the barbeque.
The depth of the aluminium cooking plates or grills is less than (ten) millimeters.
The cooking plates can be provided with peripheral flanges which extend upwardly from one major surface thereof.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is provided an auxiliary barbeque cooking plate for performing the method as aforesaid.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS.
Aspects of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which; Figure 1 is a plan view of plates of the present invention, positioned on a barbeque, and Figure 2 is an enlarged view of a plate according to the present invention, and Figure 3 is a cross-sectional drawing taken at III: III of the plate of figure 2.
With respect to the drawings an auxiliary barbeque plate according to the present invention generally indicated by arrow 1 is of a rectilinear configuration having an upper flanged cooking face and a lower face 3 which is plain.
The upper cooking face 2 has a peripheral upstanding flange 2a and may include a divider flange 2b and have end handles 4.
The handles 4 can be wire handles pivotably located by lugs For the sake of lightness and efficiencies during cooking the main body of the plate 1 should be less than 10 millimeters thick, and cast in food grade aluminium.
Figure 1 of the drawings shows the cooking plates of the present invention overlaid on the roasting and grilling plates 6 and 7 of a typical domestic barbeque 8.
The auxiliary plates 1 can be used to separately cook a variety if different foods, a smaller plate 9 perhaps being used for cooking non-meat items such as eggs or mushrooms, and the larger plate 10 placed over the grill plate 7 used for cooking meats of various types.
I consider that the auxiliary barbeque plates described have many advantages including; facilitating hygienic and healthy cooking on private and public barbeques, the convenience of being able to wash a relatively lightweight and scale free plate in preparation for next use, non-charred cooking, the potential to convert conventional gas-hob outdoor cookers into friers Aspects of the present invention have been described by way of example only and it will be appreciated that modifications and additions thereto may be made without departing from the scope thereof, as defined in the appended claims.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the depth between the major surfaces of the aluminium cooking plates or grills is less than 10 (ten) millimeters.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the cooking plates are provided with peripheral flanges which extend upwardly from one major surface thereof.
4. An auxilliary barbeque cooking plate for performing the method of any one of claims 1 to 3.
5. An auxiliary barbeque cooking plate as claimed in claim 4 substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings. DATED this f day of -d/ MURTAZA BEGUM
