Abstract

A metal is electrolytically plated on or removed from an electrically conductive substrate by suspending the substrate in an electrolytic cell comprising an anode and an cathode immersed in an electrolytic bath comprising sulphuric acid and a chalcogen-contg. cpd. soluble in the bath and of formula R1-C(X)-R2 X = chalcogen; R1,R2 = H, NR3R4 or NR5, with at least one of R1,R2 being other than H; R3,R4 = H or monovalent org. radical; and R5 = divalent organic radical. In an electrolytic plating process, the substrate is employed as the cathode, and in a process for electrolytically removing a metal, the substrate is used as the anode. The molar ratio of (I) to sulphuric acid is 1-5 and the molar ratio of water to the combination of sulphuric acid and (I) is 10 or less, pref. 5 or less. Opt. a d.c. voltage is impressed across the substrate and other electrode.
