Abstract

An endless line (3) of wooden boards which can be sawn into beams of any desired length consists of a plurality of layers of boards (1) glued and pressed together at staggered joints (2). While the boards (1) are joined in a pressing and glue-hardening section (7), other boards (1) are coated with glue and pressed one by one against the end of a board (7) projecting from the pressing and glue-hardening section (7), the pressure being applied to the free front side of each other board (1'). Spring-back forces are absorbed by the layers of glue applied to the wide side of the superimposed boards (1, 1') immediately the excess glue is forced out of the joint (2) so that application of the pressure can be interrupted before advancing the line. This permits the use of a pressure device having a single pressure element capable of applying pressure to the front side of each other board (1') and which can be displaced parallel and perpendicular to the direction of feed. During the next working cycle, each subsequent group of other boards (1') passes through the pressing and glue-hardening section (7) and the boards are joined to one another and to the preceding boards (1).
