Abstract

An apparatus and method for manipulating tubular segments (30) to be made up into a tubular string (34), the apparatus comprising: a swing arm (18) having a proximal end coupled to a hoist; an actuator (21, 121) coupled to the swing arm (18) to move the swing arm (18); a single joint elevator (22) coupled to a distal end (17) of the swing arm (18) to releasably support a tubular segment (30), the swing arm (18) being movable to align the tubular segment (30) with another tubular segment to form the tubular string (34); and characterized by a sacrificially failing link coupled between the single joint elevator (22) and the proximal end of the swing arm (18).
