The drill rotating and feeding stem 68 carries a chuck 69. for receiving Vvthe shank of'a usual augerdrill steel 1.0 (see Fig." 6I). When both clutches of the drill feeding and rotation mechanism are applied,
they drill steel may be fed forwardly at a. slow drilling speed, and when one or the other of the clutches is released, thedrill steel=may be fed either forwardly or rearwardly at a relatively high positioning speed.
Inthe form of the invention shown in Fig. 9, the drill supportingv structure and drilling means are essentially the same as those abovedescribed with the exception that'extensible powerdevices are provided for` adjusting the arm and drill supportl about their "respectivepivotal axes. These power devices preferably comprise hydraulic cylinder and? piston devices -ll and I2 'to which liquid under pressure may beiv supplied from any suitable source.` The cylinder and'piston device Tl' has its cylinder pivotally'connected at 13 to the support l3| 'and its piston rod 14 pivotally connected at 'l5 lto the swivel support 53. The cylinder and piston device 12 has its cylinder pivotally mounted at 'I6 on vthe turntable 26 and its piston rodll pivotallyconnected at 'I8 to the outer end of the arm 32." By operating these cylinderand piston devices 1| and "I2, the arm and drill support may be swung into different adjusted positions-about their respective pivotal axes, and when the liquid is trapped within the cylinders the parts are locked in their adjusted positions. The provision'of the vpower adjusting devices for effecting adjustment ofthe drilling means-eliminat the necessity of manipulation of the relatively heavy drill parts, thereby aiding inthe setting up ofthe drill; Otherwise this form of the invention is the same as that above described.
The mode of operation of the improved mining apparatus will be clearlyapparent from the description given. The ,drilling means may be transported about the mine from oncworking place to another while the drill isresting on the top of the turntable or in any other convenient position. When the working place is reached, the cutter-carrying-head, Bof the coal machine may be adjusted into pQsiticn on the cutter bar l2 in any desired horizontalv or vertical cutting` planes between the mine. roof and mine floor and between the ribs of the. entry,and the cutter Abar may be sumped in. swung arcuately about its Plane and withdrawn from the coal seamv in ac.- cordance with the arcwall methode! cutting, in the manner well known tothose skilled iu the. art.
