The valve 93 conr-` trols the supply of hydraulic pressure to and from the opposite ends of the'lifting cylinders 30 through conduits |00, |91, while the valve 94 controls the supply of hydraulic pressure to and from the rear arm cylinders 21 through conduits |02 and |03. The valve 95 controls the supply of hydraulic pressure and the discharge of fluid from the turntable,rotating'motor |11 through conduits IM and4 |95. It willthus be seen that the various' hydraulically operated devices may be operated in either of opposite directions under the individual controllof the valves,v so that the parts adjusted thereby may be moved f in either of opposite directions and locked'in such adjusted position b-y trapping the hydraulic pres sure within the hydraulic motors.
The general mode of operation of the form of the invention above described is as follows: The apparatus may be propelled along the mine trackway from one working place to another-and during'the cutting operation, through the' base propelling mechanisml driven by the motor 85, in
the manner clearly described in the above mentioned Joy application. When the working place is reached and it is desired to cut a horizontal kerf at the floor level in' accordance with the arc- Wall method of cutting, the turntable 8 and boom 9 may be adjusted relative tothe base to locate thekerf cutter at one side of the trackway at the level of the mine floor withits tip end at the coal face near the right hand rib. `The motor may then be operated to effect circulation of the cutter chain about the ma'rgin of the Cutter bar, and upon propulsion of the apparatus bodily forwardly along the minetrackway, the kerf cutteris surnped'beneaththel coal to the position shown in Fig. 9. Upon completion of the sump',- ing cut, the truck wheels are braked, in a known manner, to hold the base stationary with respect to the trackway, and the turntable rotating motor I4 is operated to rotate the turntable 8, thereby to effect swinging of the kerfcutterhorizontally in its planes about the turntable axis to eiect its transverse cutting operation. When the tip end of the kerf cutter assumes a position adjacent the left hand rib and the swinging eut is completed, the truck wheel brake is released and the apparatus is propelled bodily rearwardly along the mine trackway to eflect withdrawal of the kerf cutter beneath the coal. When it is desired to insert a horizontal kerf in the coal face at the roofl level, the rear arm cylinders 21 and the lifting cylinders 30 are operated to swing the boom in a Vertical direction about its pivotal connection with the pair of outer arms 2|, and the cutter head 39 is rotated about its axis relative to the boom to adjust the kerf cutter from the bottom cutting position shown in Fig. 9 to the topl cutting position shown in Fig. 8. When the kerf cutter assumes its top cutting position, as shown in Fig. 8, the apparatus may be operated to 'effect sumping, swinging, and withdrawal movements of the cutter bar in accordance with the arcwall method of cutting, in a manner identical to that above described in connection with the kerf cutter may be adjusted from its top cutting position Vabove the head axis, as shown in' Fig. 11, to a horizontal cutting position below the head axis. In any of the horizontal cutting positions above described, the kerf cutter may be tiltedinto angularly related planes with respect to thehorizontal by operating the 'cutter'support swinging 14 to swing the cutter support 42 either upwardly or downwardly about its pivot relative tothe cutter head 39 and boom. Furthermore, during any of the horizontal cutting operations above described, the kerf cutter may be rocked with .the cutter head about the head axis relative to the boom to enable the cutter bar to follow an uneven or rolling bottom or pitching'coal seam. When it is desired tov insert a vertical shear cut in the coal face, as shown in Fig; ,10, the cutter head 39 may be rotated to adjust the kerf cutter into a vertical cutting position with respect to the boom. The kerf cutter may then be swung upwardly by the rear arm cylinders 21 and the lifting cylinders 30, until its tip end assumes a position at the roof level. 'I'he apparatus may then be propelled bodily'forwardly l along the mine trackway to sump the kerf cutter into the coal. The truck wheels of the base may.
then be braked to hold the base stationary with respect to the trackway, and the rear arm and lifting cylinders 21 and 3|) may then be operated to swing the boom in a vertical direction relative" to the turntable to move the kerf cutter in vertical planes in an arcuate path to effect a ver-` tical swinging cut. When the tip end of the kerf cutter assumes a position at the floor level, the
truck wheel brake may be released and the apparatus propelled bodily rearwardly along the trackway to effect withdrawal of the kerf cutter from the coal. By adjusting the turntable, boom,- cutter head and cutter support about their respective pivotal axes, the kerf cutter may bev adjusted into positions to cut horizontal and vertil cal kerfs in either rib at either side of the coal face in an obvious. manner. In any of the cutting operations vabove described, the angular relation of the kerfA cutter With respect to the boom-may be changed simply by releasing the locking bar 49, swinging the kerf cutter about its pivot, and then relooking the cutter.
.'ln the modified form of the invention disclosed in Figs. 12 to 19, inclusive, the portable base. turnable, rotatable cutter head, tiltable cutter support and lrerfv cutter are similar to those above described; the'invention, in this instance, residing primarily in the particular boom structure intervening the turntable and cutter head.
