Abstract

An intermediate housing (103) of the known type, which forms the water jacket of the enclosed cylinder tube (104), represents a simple design without any particular features. The intermediate housing (103) is a completely separate component fitted between the crankcase and cylinder head. The aim of the present invention is to produce an internal combustion engine with an improved (in relation to prior art) intermediate housing (103). This is done by providing the extended area with a support surface for an injection pump element (115), the support surface being provided with a lead-through. With this design, all the functional components associated with a cylinder unit can be incorporated directly in the intermediate housing. This in turn makes it possible to improve the injection system (115), in particular by reducing the length of injection ducts leading to the relevant injection valve. The result is a more rigid injection system and other associated improvements in terms of injection, consumption, exhaust emissions and noise. At the same time, the assembly process required with the present invention is optimised by the fact that the cylinder head, intermediate housing, cylinder tube, piston and connecting rod form a single assembled unit which can be pre-assembled. These components can therefore be assembled at another site, if appropriate by mechanics especially trained for that task, and installed as pre-assembled units in the engine.
