Abstract

The invention relates to a process for producing floatable hollow clay bodies, a gypsum mould, which is closed with the exception of a filling opening, being filled with a flowable clay composition, there remaining adhered to the interior surface of the gypsum mould a solid clay layer the thickness of which is dependent on the residence time and which, after the pouring out of the excess clay composition in the gypsum mould, forms a hollow body which, after initial drying, is removed from the gypsum mould, glazed and fired. Using the process, it should be possible to produce hollow bodies which, after they have been placed on a water surface, always assume a desired floating position and retain this. This is achieved in that, after the initial drying of the hollow body, it is preferably partly filled with a further clay composition while still in the gypsum mould and, after the initial drying of a suitable amount of the clay composition, the remainder of the clay composition is emptied out again, whilst, during the initial drying time, the hollow article is rotated and held in a position such that the aforementioned amount of clay composition dries in a layer which stabilises the desired floating position. <IMAGE>
