Die Spritzmündung all, in die das Röhrchen b einmündet, kann aus einem oder mehreren Löchern der Behälterwand bestehen, oder, wenn man einen breiten Strahl erzielen will, auch aus einem Schlitz.
Um den Behälter a ist ein Ring c gelegt, der eine Bohrung cl besitzt, welche der Öffnung al entspricht. Durch Drehen dieses Ringes kann man die Öffnung a1 luftdicht abschliessen.
Der Apparat wirkt in folgender Weise : Nachdem man das deckelbildende Luftdruckmittel abgenommen oder nachdem man nur auf den Rand desselben gedrückt hat, so dass eine Einlassöffnung für die Flüssigkeit zwischen diesem Rand und dem umgebogenen Rand a2 des Behälters entsteht, füllt man diesen bis ungefähr % voll, um das Loch al nicht zu verstopfen. Der Deckel (Gummibirne, Membran oder gleitende Deckel) wird nun wieder auf den Behälter aufgebracht oder, wenn im Falle einer Gummibirne diese nicht weggenommen wurde, lässt man sie wieder in ihre frühere Stellung zurücktreten. Indem man alsdann den Apparat fest mit der Hand umschliesst, drückt man mit dem freigebliebenen Daumen dieser Hand auf den Deckel.
Mit dieser Bewegung presst man die im oberen Teil des Behälters befindliche Luft nieder, und übt so einen entsprechenden Druck auf die darunter befindliche Flüssigkeit aus, so dass diese in das Röhrchen b steigt und sich dann mit dem aus dem Loch al herausgepressten Luftstrahl mischt und so die Zerstäubung bewirkt.
Wenn nachher der Daumen den Deckel freigibt, kehrt dieser selbsttätig in seine Ruhelage zurück und erzeugt so einen Luftzug durch das Loch al im oberen Teil des Behälters a über der Fläche der bleibenden Flüssigkeit.

Wenn man den Apparat derart neigt, dass der Flüssigkeitsspiegel im Behälterinnern das Loch al verdeckt, so kann man den Apparat auch als Spritze für die Erzeugung eines ununterbrochenen Strahles benutzen. Kehrt man den Apparat vollständig um, so dass oben nach unten zu liegen kommt, so lässt sieh noch eine anders geartete Zerstäubung erzielen.
