Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the desulfurization of mineral oils.
The invention relates to the desulfurization of mineral oils, whether they are formed from natural petroleum or by dry distillation of shale or similar material. For this purpose it has already been proposed to treat the oil vapors with a mixture of quick lime and iron oxide. In the case of the so far not researched but at least with oils of different origins and different properties of the sulfurous impurities, this known method could not lead to the desired result in all cases. The present method consists in that granular burnt clay or granular magnesite, which are not mixed with iron oxide, are made to act on the vapors of the sulfur-containing oil, hydrogen sulfide being split off by catalytic action and removed in a known manner.
According to the invention, a natural oil or oil that has not been subjected to destructive distillation is heated sufficiently to vaporize it, whereupon the vapors are brought into contact with the granular substances, whereby the sulfur compounds contained therein decompose and - in the case of some oils perhaps also part of them is absorbed. When decomposition occurs, the sulfur is released in the form of hydrogen sulphide, which can then be absorbed in the usual way by iron oxide or other substances. If the oil were obtained by fractional distillation, this is the temperature to which it should be heated. generally higher than that at which it was distilled.
The granular material to be used is best pure granular clay (A12 03), which is obtained in a suitable manner from the trihydrate or from carefully selected and granular, pure bauxite: calcined and granular, pure magnesite is also suitable for this.
These materials are contained in suitable apparatus, which can be designed as cylindrical retorts, and are obtained at a suitable temperature, which depends on the treated oil and on the stability of the sulfur compounds to be decomposed.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Process for the desulfurization of mineral oils, u. between natural oils or oils not subjected to the destructive distillation, characterized in that the oil is evaporated and the vapors are brought into contact with clay so that the sulfur compounds are decomposed and hydrogen sulfide is released.
