Russ. Phys. Chem.

Process for the preparation of acetaldehyde.
The formation of acetaldehyde from acetylene and water vapor has been observed several times and various types of reaction-promoting substances have been used in such experiments. So Desgrez has the direct hydration of the acetylene at
Presence of charcoal brought about (Bulletin de la Société Chimique, 3rd series, 1I, p. 363).
Bone found that porous porcelain, a mixture of different oxides, of which z. B. Alumina is an effective agent at elevated temperature brings about the combination of acetylene and water vapor (Proceedings of the Chemical Society, Vol. 21, p. 221). A later observation by Tschitschib1bin (Journ. Russ. Phys. Chem. Ges., 407, pp. 703 to 13) confirms that the most varied of oxides act as aldehyde formers, such as B. 0, ZM 0, FeO, NiO, etc. An economical process for the technical preparation of acetaldehyde by hydration of acetylene using the catalytic effect of oxides has not yet been worked out.
Tests have shown that the catalytic effect of the oxides or mixture of oxides used diminished very quickly or sometimes did not occur at all, and it was not clear why this was due.
It has now been found that the oxides suitable for acetaldehyde formation are very
