Device for determining the point in time for projectiles to be dropped from aircraft with a downward pointing device with a variable inclination of the target line.
The present invention relates to a device which is equipped with a downwardly directed aiming device, the aiming line of which is moved by an adjustable gear (e.g. a cam gear) which is moved by a steadily rotating engine (e.g. a clockwork), experiences a change in inclination and which is used to determine the point in time when the projectile is dropped from aircraft, d. i. the point in time at which the finish line reaches the position at which the angle it includes with the perpendicular is equal to the lead angle.
To introduce the train of thought of the invention, FIG. 1 of the drawing serves. Here A, C is the trajectory of an aircraft moving at height H with velocity v. Depending on whether the aircraft is in A or B or C, the target line directed towards a target Z is inclined at an angle tp, or a or zero, with respect to the perpendicular. Let the angle a be the lead angle, i.e. H. when the finish line reaches the slope a against the perpendicular, the time has come for the projectile to be released.
In order for the line of sight to remain permanently directed towards the goal, the angle (p must be changed continuously, according to the easily derived equation
EMI1.1
The lead angle a is determined by the equation

B. in a known manner the movements of the target line (the changes in the angle tp) are indicated by a pointer on a scale divided according to angle values, on which the lead angle a is indicated by a second pointer. Such a display device is unnecessary if an automatic triggering of the projectile is provided which is dependent on the lead angle and the position of the target line. The advantage of a
EMI2.2
angle becomes particularly easy.
If a telescopic sight is used as the aiming device, it is advisable, in order to achieve the greatest possible inclination of the target line against the perpendicular, to arrange the target mark of the telescope so that it cannot be adjusted and to adjust the target line by rotating a mirror system arranged in front of the lens of the telescope.
An advantageous embodiment is obtained when each of the two gears is equipped with a cam, namely the gear moved by the engine with a cam that experiences a uniform rotary movement through the engine and in which
EMI2.3
Setting the lead angle serving gear with a cam, which is arranged so that it can experience two setting movements, namely on the one hand a rotation and on the other hand in the direction of its axis of rotation a shift, one of which is due to the coupling of the two gears with each other when setting the the cam belonging to the other gear takes place automatically.
In order to be able to change the inclination of the finish line quickly within wide limits, without the movement imparted to the finish line by the engine being disturbed (which is, for example, desirable in order not to have to change the target again after the drive of the finish line has been controlled to require this drive), the engine can be attached to a rotatable bushing, which provides the bearing for the target line.
EMI2.4
when the bushing is rotated, the cam body then experiences a further rotation independently of the rotation caused by the engine.

in which a telescopic sight serves as the aiming device. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the device containing the optical axis of the telescopic sight, Fig. 3 is another vertical section.
The riflescope is a terrestrial one. Of its optical parts, only the objective a1 fixedly mounted in the telescope housing a and a prism system connected in front of this objective are visible. This prism system consists of two isosceles right-angled prisms, one of which, a2, is fixedly arranged in the housing a, while the other, a3, which conveys the light entry, is in a sleeve b rotatably mounted in the housing a, whose axis of rotation is the optical axis of the telescope and is directed perpendicular to the plane containing the optical axis, is arranged so that its mirror surface contains this axis of rotation.
The fixed prism, a2 is connected to another isosceles right-angled prism so that
EMI2.6
By means of the prism a3 visible object, a target mark cl applied to a glass plate c can be observed. This target is mounted gimbally so that the center of the mounting coincides with the front main point of a converging lens d and has a distance from the target that is equal to the focal length of this converging lens, so that the target line determined by the target is always perpendicular.
EMI2.7
Such rotation is brought about by raising and lowering a wire e, the lower end of which engages a bracket el, the two arms of which are each articulated with one of two arms bl attached to the bushing b. A spring b2 attached to the housing a and to the bushing b always seeks to transfer the bushing into the end position in which the position of the prism c? corresponds to the greatest hold of the finish line.
The raising and lowering of that wire e is effected by a rotation of a lever which acts on the upper end of the wire and which is wedged with a shaft / 0 rotatably mounted on the housing a
EMI2.8
the shaft / 0 is attached and its arm. ; engages with a cam g. This is in a bearing body 11, which is guided between two guide strips a6 on the housing a,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
that it can be moved parallel to the main axis of the telescope, rotatably mounted so that its axis of rotation is parallel to the direction of displacement of the bearing body.
A clockwork housed in a housing i, of which only the shaft il is visible in the drawing, gives the cam body g a uniform, counterclockwise rotation when viewed from above by means of a shaft i2. When the bearing body h is displaced, the shaft i2 can slide with a groove i3 along a spring g1 of the cam body. The clockwork housing i is fastened to a sleeve k rotatably mounted on the housing a, the axis of rotation of which coincides with that of the cam g. This bushing forms the bearing for a shaft 1, which can be rotated by a knob [1 and on which a gear 12 is attached, which meshes with a toothing h1 of the bearing body h, the teeth of which each revolve around the bearing body h.
The cam body g is designed so that in its highest position,

against the plumb line (#) changes from about 709 to 00. In the lowest position of the cam, which corresponds to the smallest adjustable value of that quotient, there is a change in this

parallel axis is rotatably arranged on the housing a so that the free end of the arm m 'is visible through the eyepiece of the telescopic sight. The angle lever is adjusted by a lever / * fixed on the shaft, with which its arm m2 engages by means of a slot guide.
The bearing body h also forms the bearing for a second cam body n, which, like the cam body g, participates in the displacements of the bearing body and thereby

mounted shaft ol, whose axis of rotation coincides with that of the cam body g; is, and along which it can slide h when the bearing body is displaced. The shaft o1 can be rotated by means of a drive button o2, a pointer 03 indicating the value of the rotation on a scale as divided according to flight altitude. The arm p1 is at one with the curve body n
Angle lever pl, p2 engaged, the arm p2 of which is attached to a shaft po which is parallel to the shaft f and rotatably mounted on the housing a.
The cam body n is designed so that, when it is brought into such a position that the pointer o3 on the scale al indicates the current flight altitude H and the setting of the bearing body A corresponds to the current value of the
EMI3.4
Shaft 'fixed lever set p3, with which his arm q2 is in engagement by means of a slot guide. The arms m1 and ql of the two angle levers are close together so that

For use, the device is to be attached to an aircraft in such a way that its main axis is perpendicular when the aircraft is in a horizontal position. Then the clockwork is to be set in motion, by turning the sleeve k about its axis of rotation, the cam body g, and thus the prism <, to be adjusted so that the image of the target mark cl with the image of one with a bomb
