Process for dissolving and gelatinizing cellulose esters.
The number of usable solvents and gelatinizing agents for cellulose esters is small, especially if one is looking for such a universal agent for all cellulose esters. It is a particularly suitable solvent that dissolves or dissolves any type of acetylated cellulose.
EMI1.1
The surprising observation has now been made that the useless furfural or its homologues now obtained as a waste product in large quantities and all types of cellulose esters, such as. B. nitrocellulose and acetyl cellulose of any acetylation type and stage and mixed cellulose esters, such as. B.
Nitro acetyl cellulose, dissolves and gelatinizes,
The furfural or its homologues are processed in the known way to solutions, lacquers and plastic materials. Surprisingly, it was also found here that a relatively low percentage of furfural is sufficient to produce a
To bring about gelatinization of the cellulose esters, similar to that which camphor exerts in the nitrocellulose in the celluloid production. To carry out the process, both pure and technical furfural or its homologues can be used alone or in a mixture with other mixtures which dissolve or do not dissolve the cellulose esters.
It goes without saying that softening additives as well as those that are intended to exert any special effect on the product can also be added to the fabrics. The process will be explained briefly using a few examples.
At pie I 1. 10 parts of acetone-soluble acetyl cellulose are kneaded with 1 part of furfural and 10 parts of alcohol in a kneader and processed into plastic masses.
Examples 11. 10 parts of tetrachloroethane-soluble acetyl cellulose are dissolved in 50 parts of furfural. Benzene or alcohol and also water can be added to the solution as an extender.
Example ni. 10 parts of nitrocellulose are kneaded with 1 part of furfural and 10 parts of alcohol and processed into plastic masses. It goes without saying that instead of furfural, its homologues, e.g. B. methylfurfurol (z. B. in the same amount as specified in the above examples), and that other liquids can be selected instead of alcohol. It is also a matter of course that each of these cellulose esters can be processed into lacquers and solutions as well as into plastic compositions with furfural or its homologues. The examples are only intended to demonstrate the versatility of the process.
