Process for the preparation of cellulose derivatives.

Cellulose is known to be easily wetted by water. It has now been shown, unexpectedly, that thionyl chloride has a very special effect on the cellulose in that the cellulose is thereby put into a state that makes wetting significantly more difficult or prevented, so that cellulose can be made waterproof in this way . To carry out the method you can, for. B. draw cellulose or cellulose derivatives through an approximately 10% thionyl chloride solution in benzene. In this way, previously highly water-absorbent paper then repels the water as if it were surrounded by a thin layer of fat, while in fact no precipitation on the cellulose fiber is noticeable.

The action of thionyl chloride on cellulose is most likely of a chemical nature, in that it creates chemical derivatives that are close to cellulose.

The cellulose pretreated with thionyl chloride can also be advantageously converted into a wide variety of cellulose compounds, e.g. B. in the acid esters. The acetylation process of cellulose pretreated with thionyl chloride is shortened compared to the action of acetic anhydride on cellulose that has not been pretreated. One can naturally
