Description

Method of soaking woven transmission belts using asphalt and balata.
It has already been proposed to use asphalt as a binding agent for textile belts, but impregnation with asphalt alone has the disadvantage that the asphalt cracks and splinters easily in winter cold, while it sticks uncomfortably in summer heat.
Balata has also been used as an impregnation agent. However, it only forms a superficial coating on the fabric and is therefore entirely unsuitable on its own for impregnating drive belts, although the increase in adhesion for drive belts achieved by the impregnation would be particularly desirable.
According to the invention, woven drive belts are impregnated with a mixture of asphalt and balata or a similar type of rubber. The asphalt solution penetrates deep into the fabric so that it is saturated, while the balata remains on the surface and forms an external coating on the belt. The impregnation with asphalt makes the belt stronger and more resistant and the balata cover makes it impermeable to air, so that it adheres strongly to it by suction

change and is resistant to rot. The breaking strength of the fabric belts is also increased by about g / o by the impregnation according to the invention.
The impregnation is expediently carried out in such a way that the woven belts or tapes are pulled through a benzene solution of asphalt and balata and allowed to dry. Here, the impregnation can also be carried out with the aid of the known spreading machines, the so-called spreading machines. If necessary, this impregnation is repeated until the impregnated belt no longer changes in length. The belt can then be subjected to moderate pressure.
Instead of balata, gutta-percha or a similar type of gum can be used.
