Process for the production of flexible, storable iron leather.
For the production of ferrous leather, among other things, a process is known to add nitrite to the bath to oxidize the iron oxide salts and to free the nitrous acid by acidification with sulfuric acid, which causes the oxidation of the iron oxide salts.
This cycling has the disadvantage that the free acid, which is created by dissociation of the ferric sulfate, is later difficult or impossible to remove from the leather. The leather is then attacked and destroyed during storage. In addition, in this way a leather is obtained that, according to professional expression, is empty.
It has now been shown that you can eliminate these problems and obtain a full, flexible, storage-stable leather if you add the nitrite to the bath containing normal iron oxide salt, but also add cellulose extract (waste liquor from cellulose manufacture), an acid addition, to the bath but avoids.
In this way the iron oxide slowly separating out of the solution through the oxidation is absorbed by the pelt, while the bath remains neutral, since the sodium from the nitrite neutralizes the acid. The components of the cellulose extract penetrate the same
EMI1.1
The following example will explain the procedure:
The simply painted or smoothed pelt is placed in a bath that contains 3 to 4% table salt and left for one to two hours, depending on the thickness of the pelt. Then 40% iron vitriol (Fe SO 4) and 30% lellulose extract are added to the bath, followed by 0.4% nitrite (N aN 02) by weight of the pelt.
One can also use the substances gradually in solid or dissolved form in another
Add sequence and other weight ratio depending on the quality of the pelt.
The leather is done after five to eight days, which can be seen from the even cut.
Then you take the leather out of the bath, beat it on a buck and leave it a few
Laying in the air for days to fix the iron tanning agent well. Then you rinse with pure
Water to remove unbound substances. After this treatment, the leather is finished as usual.
