Cooling device for the piston of internal combustion engines.
The invention relates to a cooling device for the piston of internal combustion engines, in which the cooling is done by water that is passed through the piston.
In known devices of this type, it is customary to provide the piston with inlet and outlet pipes for the cooling water, which pipes are pushed in and out of other pipes, which are attached to a non-movable machine part and are used to supply and discharge the cooling water Loss of water is prevented by means of suitable seals between the sliding and the fixed pipes. However, these seals have the shortcoming that they are quickly worn out, which is particularly easy to occur in marine engines in which salt water is used for cooling.
Devices have also been used in which the inlet and outlet tubes of the piston do not close tightly in the stationary tubes. The cooling water is then fed in the form of a powerful jet through the inlet pipe of the piston and through the cavity of the piston. The water has to be sent through the pipes with a force that is sufficient to overcome the resistance. In order to be able to use such a device, however, water must be available under high pressure.
Devices have also been used in which the cooling water is supplied under pressure through a fixed tube which is loosely inserted into a tube attached to the machine piston and leading to the cavity of the same. The latter is loosely surrounded by a fixed pipe that catches the water that seeps down between the two pipes. The clearance between the two first-mentioned tubes must, however, be at least as large as the clearance between the piston and the cylinder wall, since the two tubes are attached to these machine parts. This leeway becomes so large, especially in larger machines where water cooling is important, that this, in conjunction with the inevitable inaccuracies of the two very long tubes, makes a sufficiently good seal between the tubes impossible.
The invention, which relates to a cooling device of the last-mentioned type, eliminates this deficiency in that the fixed water supply pipe is provided at the top with a head with a larger outer diameter than the pipe and is elastically attached or is itself elastic, so that the head is attached to the small side movements of the piston Tube can follow and that, as a result, the clearance between the fixed feed tube and the tube attached to the piston is reduced to the size desired for other reasons.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing. This illustrates a vertical section through the parts of an upright internal combustion engine necessary for understanding the invention.
Two tubes e and f-inserted one inside the other are fastened to the piston 1, of which the outer tube f is fastened to the piston head 2 by means of a flange 3, while the inner tube e is inserted tightly in a bore in the piston head 2 and

is held in place by a partially conical sleeve g pushed in at its other end. The socket has a screw-threaded cylindrical part which is screwed into the end of the pipe f. and is held in place by a lock nut 4. The conical part of the sleeve g is provided with holes h.
The inner tube e is above from one to the upper part of the cavity of the
EMI2.1
is, while the annular space between the tubes e and f is in free communication with a coming through the piston head 2 from the cavity of the piston channel le.
The cooling water is passed under moderate pressure through a pipe a to a pipe b inserted vertically from below in pipe e, which has an edge or collar 1n at its lower end, which by means of a ring q tightly against a in a cutout. The tight, elastic packing attached to the sleeve n is tensioned so that the pipe b, without the connection between the same and the pipe a becoming leaky, can yield so much that it is always in alignment with the pipe e, even if this does not move exactly vertically up and down, which prevents excessive wear.
The upper end of the tube b carries a cylindrical head d which slides loosely in the tube e and which can be made of smallpox, bronze or other suitable material.
From the sleeve n an upwardly open tube o goes out, which can have an extension 5 at the top, the top. is completed by the inwardly bent edge of the tube o. The pipe o is at the bottom in connection with a drain pipe p for the draining cooling water. '
The device works in the following way: The water entering the cavity of the piston under moderate pressure through the tubes a and b and a length of the tube e that can vary depending on the position of the piston 1 flows through the channel i into the cavity of the piston and out of it through the channel k and the annular space between the tubes e and f.
Part of the incoming water will seep past the pipe head d through the pipe e and flow out through the drain pipe p together with the main amount of water flowing out between the pipes e and f and through the holes A.
As I said above, that is. The construction shown is only to be regarded as one embodiment, since the details can of course be changed in various ways without departing from the essence of the invention.
