PATENT-ANSPRÜCHE : i.

Adjustable cooling device for electrodes.
With electrodes, especially in mercury mpfappaia. ten, it depends. to keep the protruding from the container part of the electrode so cool that it is gas-tight against the container, for. B. can be sealed by means of rubber liners, but without reducing the temperature of the active electrode part in the container so much that mercury, for example, could condense on it. With the previously usual water cooling

molten substances, such as B. lead, which more or less fill the cavity of the electrode.
If the part of a hollow electrode protruding into a mercury vapor apparatus is filled with lead, the sealing points can easily be reduced to a low level, e.g. by cooling the part of the electrode located above the lead level with cooling water. B. go "C do not exceed the temperature, while the effective end of the electrode in the container remains glowing dark red.
A cooling device according to the invention is shown in the drawing in an exemplary embodiment in vertical section. The hollow electrode 1 is provided at the upper end with a flange 2, in the lower surface of which a rubber ring 3 is embedded. With this ring, the electrode rests on the upper edge of the sealing insulator 4, the lower edge of which rests against a rubber ring 5 in the cover 6. A cooler 7 is inserted into the upper opening of the electrode. The electrode cavity is covered with a suitable material which is solid at normal temperature and has a relatively low melting point, e.g. B. filled with lead, which is liquid when the electrode is in operation.
This protects the effective end a of the electrode against excessive cooling, while the cooling liquid (water, oil or the like) circulating through the cooler 7

By appropriately dimensioning the amount of meltable coolant filled into the electrode cavity, the temperature gradient of the electrode can be regulated within wide limits, in particular so that condensation of mercury on the electrode as far as it is exposed to the vacuum. is avoided.
PATENT CLAIMS: i. Adjustable cooling device for electrodes, characterized in that its cavity is partially filled with an easily meltable material (e.g. lead) which is solid at normal temperature.
