Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the manufacture of machinable acid-resistant silicon-containing alloys.
Alloys with a high silicon content are widely used in the chemical industry due to their acid resistance. The requirements made here mostly require silicon content of 8 to so%. which already have such hardness and brittleness
EMI1.1
but successes were only ever achieved at the expense of acid resistance.
The invention now remedies these evils by having found that the undesirable
EMI1.2
can be reduced quite considerably. without reducing the acid resistance.
Example: For an alloy with 15% Si and 85% Fe. which already has such a hardness that it scratches glass, the addition of o'oi% B already results in a significant reduction in hardness, while an addition of 0'03 to 0.04% B causes the alloy to be turned, bored, Files etc. can be processed. At the same time the structure has undergone a significant refinement.
This surprising effect of boron was all the less to be expected as this element is known, e.g. B. when adding to steel. itself has an extraordinarily hardening property.
By eliminating the brittleness of silicon alloys, the invention enables the chemical industry to use them in a variety of ways, in particular also by eliminating the previous restrictions in shaping. For the various common silicon contents, there is an optimum for the most favorable boron content.
