Retanning of ice-cream leather.
That under the name G! aceleder well-known glove leather is characterized by its special softness and speed. In order to be able to produce gloves of greater coarseness and water resistance, a move has been made to make the glass leather stronger and at the same time water-resistant by retanning it with vegetable tanning agents, in particular with Gambier. The leather of this type is generally known as nappa leather.
It has now been found that the same properties as with Gambier can be imparted to the glacé leather by retanning with basic iron salts, which is particularly advantageous at the moment, since iron salts can be produced domestically, while Gambier must be imported from abroad.
Example: 100 / water-washed and drained ice cream is left in a barrel in a solution of 5 ferric chloride and 3 kg table salt in 75 liters of water for one to two hours and then 10 kg are placed in three equal parts in water over a period of three hours dissolved iron chloride, which has previously been made two-thirds basic with soda. After the last addition, the skins are moved for another two to three hours until they are evenly tanned. The skins tanned in this way are dyed and trimmed as usual with nappa leather.
The more basic ferric chloride is added, the stronger the loder and vice versa.
