Process for the production of steel tools for working iron and other hard materials by casting in permanent molds.

As is well known, steel tools for working iron and other materials have hitherto been produced in such a way that the rod obtained by one of the known production methods was subjected to mechanical processing in the heat, then to shaping and finally to a heat treatment adapted to the respective purpose, whereby Each of these operations consist of several phases or could be repeated.

In recent times, attempts have also been made to manufacture tools suitable for the above purposes in such a way that certain alloys are cast directly in molds which correspond to the final shape of the tool. However, these alloys either contained no or very little iron, or those alloys in which iron was retained as the main component had to be subsequently subjected to a heat treatment.

Up to now, it has been possible to use direct

Detailed audits have now shown that, under certain conditions, tools can also be made from nut-like tool steel of any composition known up to now by direct casting in molds, which can only be applied to the desired structure without further heat treatment! t need to be sanded in order to fully correspond to all previous uses.

Because the various operations listed at the outset are omitted in this manufacturing process, the manufacture of tools for processing iron or other hard materials is very much simplified and made cheaper.

lined with refractory mass or at least coated with graphite, soot, tar or the like. These poor or comparatively poor heat conductors, even if they are applied in a thin layer, prevent the tool from being quenched sufficiently with steel grades of the usual composition at the same time as the casting process or immediately afterwards through the iron mold.

On the basis of this knowledge, according to the invention, the molds made of poorly thermally conductive materials or from well thermally conductive materials that were coated and coated on the inside with poor thermal conductors were discarded and, with success, molds made of iron, steel or another good thermally conductive metal
