Durch diesen Kunstgriff rückte die billigere Darstellung der Alkalimetalle aus Chloriden allmählich in den Bereich der Möglichkeit. aber selbst einen einwandfreien Apparat vorausgesetzt, blieb die Ausbeute an Metall immer sehr erheblich hinter der theoretischen Ausbeute zurück. Zur Erklärung der schlechten Ausbeuten hat man verschiedene mehr oder weniger zutreffende Theorien aufgestellt, welche aber zu einer praktisch brauchbaren Lösung des Problems nicht führten.
Selbst bei Verwendung von eutektischen Salzgemischen kommt man mit der Elektrolysiertemperatur doch nicht wesentlich unter 600"C herunter. Da aber bei dieser Temperatur die Alkalimetalle schon immerhin eine erhebliche Dampfspannung und damit eine erhebliche Tendenz zur Metallnebelbildung haben, so werden die Bedingungen auch durch Anwendung von Gemischen kaum vereinfacht.
Es wurde nun ein Verfahren gefunden, nach welchem es gelingt, die Alkalimetalle aus ihren Chloriden bzw. aus Salzgemischen mit vorgüglichen Ausbeuten abzuscheiden. Das Charakterstische dieses Verfahrens besteht darin, dass die Elektrolysierzone unter Druck gesetzt wird, so dass der Siedepunkt des Alkalimetalles sich nach oben verschiebt. With this trick, the cheaper preparation of the alkali metals from chlorides gradually moved into the realm of possibility. but even assuming that the apparatus was in perfect working order, the metal yield was always very considerably below the theoretical yield. Various more or less correct theories have been put forward to explain the poor yields, but these have not led to a practically useful solution to the problem.
Even with the use of eutectic salt mixtures, the electrolysis temperature does not go significantly below 600 ° C. But since at this temperature the alkali metals already have a considerable vapor tension and thus a considerable tendency to form metal mist, the conditions are also met by using mixtures hardly simplified.
A process has now been found by which it is possible to separate the alkali metals from their chlorides or from salt mixtures with excellent yields.
